Sorry to start another FF7 thread but ive seen a lot complaining about the game, assuming they aren't just bait threads what do the people who've actually played the game think of it, changes and all?
What's are the general opinions on FF7R?

It's pretty underwhelming considering it's been in production for 5+ years. It's padded with tedious and cliche side quests. The slums are barely expanded, with no upper plate exploration. Most of the areas are empty hallways with pointless alleyways. The graphics are bizarrely inconsistent, with stunning cut scenes and some of the ugliest in-game graphics we've seen this console generation. There is really no excuse for a AAA product of this magnitude to have this much of a problem loading textures and reusing assets.
The combat is the best part of the game, utilizing an interesting mix of strategy and action genres. That being said, it is missing many QoL implementations that have become standard to either genre over the last decade, making it feel clunky and cumbersome at times. And that you are locked out of using things like dodge or swinging in succession outside of combat quickly becomes tiresome. The materia system is still fantastic, as it was in 1997. Though you feel limited in your selection just by the fact this is still early on in the overall game.
The story is pants-on head retarded as has been said to death already. Even discounting the butchered ending, there's lots of eye-rolling moments and baffling decisions throughout. Lots of classic scenes were cut arbitrarily, especially considering this is only part one and it's so short even with padding.
Overall I give it an 8.5
The problem that it's not just bad, it is an irredeemable trash, considering what they should have made instead.

Game journalist syndrome?
what would you have preferred
>Lots of classic scenes were cut arbitrarily
Oh please, tell me about those scenes that were cut.
I've enjoyed most of it actually.
Game was flawed but on a good track up until the highway chase was over and they unshackled Nomura's Kingdom Heart faggotry to kick into overdrive only to end with them basically saying "From here on it's a spin off/what if scenario don't bet on seeing everything you loved again"
A remake.
Sakaguchi should've been in charge. This game has a distinct Kingdom Hearts cringe feel and we all know that it's Nomura's fault.
I agree with most of this except the score.
Given how the game is getting chopped up with no official announcement on how many installments there will be tethered with Kingdom Hearts Sephiroth I'd give it a 7
Not him but getting imprisoned and going through shinra building after the sephiroth slaughter
Not every bit of content cut is out because of technical, financial or schedule constraints.
More often than not things don't make the cut either because they fuck with the pace, they are out of place, make no sense or are just plain stupid.
Going through the Sephiroth slaughter doesn't seem to be out of place in a game about pursuing Sephiroth.
But then again we Kingdom Hearts now son
No I'm just saying, you have to contemplate why something got cut. It's not always "we don't have time/money anymore"
Not always agreed but in this scenario I'd believe its the time/money problem.
5 years a hell of a development cycle for a remake.
No contemplation necessary. Nomura just doesn't know what restraint is. He couldn't help but cut it so that sephiroth can show up super early and be so freaking cool with one wing and wouldn't it be so freaking rad if he just threw the entire shinra building at you? Goddamn Nomura is a fag.
>Nomura just doesn't know what restraint is
Man, ain't that the truth.
The man has zero sense for moderation or pacing.
Its pretty obvious why it got cut. In the original the slaughter was part of the buildup for sephiroth since you dont really see him before that.. in the remake you see him every chapter and the story assumes you already know him so the scene is pointless. Pretty sad considering its an iconic part of ff7
I'm fan of the og and got my copy early. Played it through grinning like a kid whole ride until last chapter. The finale was like a gut punch and after beating it, I just sat there watching the ending and credits all numb. After realizing it was the biggest meta middle finger to obsessive purist fans in gaming history and coming in terms with it, I'm looking forward to Part 2 and gonna buy it day 1. Now playing Hard Mode and enjoying it. It's the hardest main line FF I've played. Also went through the combat simulator for Bad Breath. Still saving the last challenge until I'm done with other Hard Mode chapters.
All in all, the experience was like having super sex with your dream girl only for her to take a shit on your face at the end. She immediately promises she wont be shitting on you anymore and she wants to have sex again in future too but you know too well not to trust on her promise but the sex is too good to pussy out
Combat is too easy and braindead if you enjoy action games.
Visuals get boring, but still technically impressive.
Soundtrack was awful compared to the original. Uematsu just forgot about melody, I guess.
Level design is non existent.
Side quests are boring MMO tier padding.
Ghosts were completely pointless, plot changes were incredibly bad.
6/10
Thanks, Nomura. No one asked you to take a dump on their favorite jrpg for no reason.
I'm probably being too generous. I have a soft spot for the characters and I did legitimately enjoy the combat. I also don't think an 8.5 score is especially good for a game that's taken 5 years to make and is a remake of one of the most beloved games of all time.
Lots. Off the top of my head the pinball base under Tifa's bar. The entirity of Johnny's scenes have been completely altered, several interactions in Wall Market are missing, and most scenes in Shinra HQ are either missing or altered. Not to mention the ghosts fucking up most of the classic scenes, like meeting Aeris or the Turks for the first time.
That's fair. I don't disagree. It could very easily be a 7 based on how bored you get doing these mundane tasks and how dissatisfied you are with the changes. A lot of the game becomes a slog and only the individual's will to see more of the characters can drive you on to the end. My score of 8.5 is the absolute most generous it deserves.
shit meant forI'm a retard
agreed
I'm up to the part where the plate fell and so far the game is 10/10 for me. My only issues with it are losing ATB/ stagger due to boss cutscenes and texture pop in. I'm enjoying everything else though.
Many scenes were mangled up, but Shinra building had it the worst. No imprisonment, amd aside from the main hall, everything else about it is a major downgrade. The minigames at the upper levels are gone.
They literally replaced soul moments with long, empty corridors all around Midgar in order to save game building time but at the same time lengthening the game. Also the amount of cutscenes is simply infuriating. It's almost like Heavy Rain.
The game takes on this non-serious manner where the whole thing feels like a joke
It's not a remake:
