Feeling inferior to Kiryu is pretty much Nishiki's entire character, so that makes sense. It just makes less sense due to 0 where they both already have the outlines of their tattoos despite the fact Nishiki starts out higher up and more respected than Kiryu. It worked better in 1 where Kiryu was ahead of Nishiki, already had the name dragon of dojima, and was about to get his own family.
