HAL has been pretty public with the fact that for the new game, they've been recruiting game devs/studios who focus on 3D games and knowing HAL's track record. If they're not satified with the finished project, they'll just scrap it.
Kirby's Gamecube got canceled because they didn't like it, and that had tons of things which ended up getting repurposed like Magolor, Morpho Knight, Haltmann, King Dedede's huge Mecha. the elemental items effects from Kirby Star Allies.

It was basically a super easy port of Team Kirby Clash Deluxe. They do the Pokémon thing and make they Future-proof their models and textures to make it easier to port to other systems. Plus seeing as both have Microtransactions, I assume it was just for quick money.

TL;DR: What ever Void Termina's Soul/Core/Whatever is has connections to both whatever species Kirby/Meta Knight/Galacta Knight is as well as Dark Matter/Zero/Gooey. Japanese lore says they are made up of the same 4 elements. The manual for Void Termina's attacks also connect it to the Ancients in the of his attacks spawning 'Master Crowns'.
Kirby lore is so fucking dumb, yet fascinating.
