Anyone who thinks Half-Life 1 is better than Half-Life 2 is a nostalgia glasses contrarian. Name ONE thing HL1 did better that isn't "wahhh i had to use a vehicle" or "wahhh the characters are talking :("

I don't know a single person who genuinely likes the Water Hazard chapter.
I don't know a single person who doesn't absolutely despise "On A Rail".
pacing, atmosphere, flow, enemies
half life 1 had better rpg elements in it
>Name ONE thing HL1 did better
Actually innovating. HL2 had physics puzzles. That's it.
I never said either game's vehicle segments were good. HL1
only had On a Rail. HL2 had you driving cars or boats through bland and unnecessarily long environments throughout several chapters.
better modding community
also hl1dm > hl2dm
>haha if i keep parroting it that means its true!
Half-Life is a masterpiece and has no bad levels/sections
The GoldSRC engine was far, FAR better in terms of modability.
The sheer number of mods alone outweigh any accomplishment of literally any other game, let alone Half-Life 2
I liked the setting of HL1 more. I never got sick of Black Mesa but found the city 17 aesthetic really boring by the end of HL2. Even the citidel look was tired by the ending
>tau cannons
>jump module
there is no multiplayer FPS experience that's more fun
Never played either, only seen freemans mind, but I've always been a fan of the familiar filled with fantasy. Like aliens taking over the workplace. Going to work at an underground lab only to have an invasion happen is a very cool premise.
>no bad section
Xen is fucking dogshit m8
the physics shit was absolutely innovative
youtube.com
listen to the audience reactions
>pacing/flow
just disagree. once you get to the surface in hl1 theres not really any new set pieces, whereas hl2 feels like i'm constantly being thrown into new scenarios. even when they re-use city17 it still feels refreshing
>atmosphere
hl2 has an infinitely better atmosphere, look up any review of it from the time and they praise how real it feels. hl1 just has a retro allure i guess
>enemies
i disagree, the terrifying fast zombies, badass striders & hunters, etc beat the annoying houndeyes and retarded hecu anyday in my book
I sort of agree with you that Half Life 2 was a better game. However the Black Mesa remake really evened the score. Either way they’re all great.
I actually liked that part.
It was, but it was the only innovative element. HL1 set a new bar in multiple dimensions.
Actual level design mechanics
Black Mesa is the worst one, if we are pretending it's an official product
the enemy variety in 1 was more interesting and the weapons were cooler
modding community is a given, i dont think any game would ever live up to the modding standard valve set with the original goldsrc. i dont think its fair to compare hl1 to hl2 in modding, though i do wanna mention that csgo is the most popular cs game ever
you're a fucking retard if you think half-life is a spotless clean game with no bad levels. neck yourself. even i will admit that water hazard can be a little boring on replay
"bland unnecessarily long environments through several chapters" is either a meme or you never played the game. theres what, 2 maybe 3 chapters set in vehicles? and they give you plenty of opportunities to explore on foot. water hazard has plenty to explore but on replay people tend to just wiz through it to get to ravenholm which causes the misconception that it's "empty". highway 17 is chalk full of buildings with combine to kill and loot to nab.
only for story related shit. Quake is mechanically the better game.
Story, atmosphere.
hl1 has no story, its basically the same beat as the original doom desu. escape the facility after demons/aliens fill it up. hl2 has an actual plot arch.
Having very little story is better than having a really universe like HL2.
Nah you’re just a fag
That's the worst shit. HL1 fags pretend black mesa is just hl1 in 2020 like it's not a fan love letter that tries to fix the horrible shit about it
It fucked up the soldier combat and while Xen is nice to look at and has a better layout, they butchered it's dirty uneasy aesthetic. Xen isnt supposed to be pandora
You don’t get to say what things should and shouldn’t be. You’re just a consumer.
>You're just a consumer
So are the black mesa devs. This is a fan game and they chose to change the Xen aesthetic despite what the official valve games make it look like.
That's fine, they can do whatever they want, but it's a downgrade from the original aesthetic intentions
The enemies. Better variety, more fun to fight.
>implying making changes rather than blindly following the original is a sign of a consumer
Are you using consumer as some sort of insult, or it's actual definition, someone who comsumes a product? I assumed the latter, in which case yes, we are both consumers
Thats the best chapter in the entire game, though.
1 had a much better setting. The true star of Half-Life is Black Mesa.
