What are some of the best 'xcom' games out there right now that aren't xcom?
I've heard that there are western, cartel, Warhammer 40k themed xcom games, phoenix point and some other.
Has anyone played any and can recommend something good?

They're all shit outside of original X-COM with OpenXCOM
Mutant Year Zero
Honestly xcom2 is the best (GET LOTS OF MODS and all the dlcs)
Pheonix point just feels (i know this word gets overused) soulless.
You do not connect to each soldier in the same way but the combat is pretty much a improvement in most respects
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle :)
forgot to add the overworld strategy in phenoix point is vastly superior but again the game lacks so much style and flair.
Also try getting a emulator and playing fire emblem awakenin/fates
Invisible, Inc. is really good if you like XCOM and stealth.
I really enjoyed Invisible inc. and Phantom Doctrine. Mutant Year Zero is alright but more story focused. There isnt any semblance of a "strategy" section in that. If you want the base building aspect that's in Xenonauts. Cant think of others at the moment but I enjoy similar types of games. Haven't tried any of the Warhammer tactics games.

What mods do you recommend for Xcom 2, user?
Warhammer 40k: Mechanicus, Mutant: Year Zero
now that I think about it, XC:UO took a metric shitton of its idea about camera, sound effects from this 15 year old predecessor. Based germans
Long War Perks, Evac All, quality of life fixes and small additions.
I've got mine choc full of Clothing mods and voice packs, my main Assault is currently the Doomguy but I've also built the who Red vs Blue squad. My Spark looks like the mechs in Titanfall just having fun with it ya know.
Just make sure if you have War of the Chosen installed you have to install the mod that supports that, if you dont, the non-WoTC variant will do.
I have noticed voice packs work regardless of what version.
openxcom x-files mod
openxcom WW1 mod
openxcom Duna mod
openxcom WH40k mod
openxcom Piratez mod
etc. etc.
I liked that wh40k Mechanicus game. The atmosphere was great and it was a bit less random so you wouldn't have those "that's xcom baby" moments.
It was too easy for my taste, but I played it on release, maybe they improved it since then.
Oh also to add to this the Steam Workshop is pretty good with this game provided you make sure whatever you install is compatible with the version or other mods you have.

fuck no, that game is all style and no substance dragged down by its poorly adapted, paper thin mechanics. The original board game is based on a D6 and it shows really badly with how massive the jumps are in its to-hit chances and how aim bonuses and penalties interact. Notably I've encountered a situation in which I go from a 100% to hit to a "target out of range" and unable to shoot just by moving 1 tile backwards. So many tooltips and UI elements are either, at best, lacking information or, at worst, flat out telling you incorrect information; one of the biggest ones I can think of is a loading screen tip that says the siren alerts hostiles on the map, but this is a flatout lie as he instead spawns in completely new hostiles. The enemies play by completely different rules than your own units do; the tanks auto hog-rush as their default move without any cooldown, for example. Skill cooldowns being reset by kills creates a fucked up scenario in which you don't actually want to stealth clear as much as you can (as is encouraged by all the games tips) because you end up not having enough kills available to you to reset your abilities by the next necessary loud combat encounter. There's also the issue that since 95% of the enemies on any given map are stealthable or killable in a single round you'll only ever get to use your cooldowns once per combat enocunter, so you better open up with them.
Trust me, I've written a 56 point list of shits that wrong with the game, from bad tooltips and descriptions to inconsistent enemy behavior and mechanical flaws. Mutant Year Zero is a shit game.
Thanks man, I'll check these mods out.

Go sit in a corner, toddler, while we discuss about real strategy games. You may join us after Mario X Plebbit has character customization, weapon, class, build, map, and enemy variety, replayability, contents, and difficulty.
Can they salvage PP? It's a mess.
Oh boy. Every time a 'community council' is made, a game goes to absolute shit.
RIP Pheonix Point
You can kill what is already dead
What pheonix point NEEDS:
FIX THE FUCKING MUSIC, the game sounds so fucking soulless, its either dead ambient music or generic sci fi shit.
FIX THE VOICES FOR SOLDIERS, make them more expressive, I feel nothing for my soldiers at all.
MAKE THE SKILLS MORE INTRESTING.
Add more visual customization or open up modding so people can do it easily.
Make shit feel more urgent a lot more early.
finally got this today on my third try with a day to spare. absolutely grueling, probably the least fun i've had playing a game i love.
