I'm currently playing the OG for the first time and I'm just past the midgar section, genuinely surprised at how well it's held up so far. Pretty solid experience.

I'm playing to play this on PC soon, is there anything I know beforehand? Any mods or whatever

If you are talking about real og and you playing it on pc, i'd go for PS emulator and playing it from PS rom. PC version, unless buying the freshest Steam version, has notoriously bad music and gameplay hurting glitches. IF you aren not accustomed to turn based jrpg, you might first play the game with ATB on WAit. That lets you take your time choosing your actions during battle. If you are familair with, go with ATB on Active to give enemies actual chance

original was decent for babies first jrpg. battle system is held up by materia being interesting. but aside from that it suffers extremely hard from its linearity. Its a movie game from before movie games became a thing and its awful for that. but at the same time, the atmosphere is fantastic
remake is just... not all there

Remake definitely made it into my personal top 10 of games, while the original has dropped from that list during all this time. If I'd have to change on thing from the remake: I would make all the dungeon crawling parts 2/3rd of their current length.

I liked the ending and I think it was refreshing that the game was not 1 to 1 remake. The ending was grandiose and further developed the eternal rivalry of Cloud and Sephiroth. I still have the original if I want to re-experience that one.

I really hope we will have a way to transfer our saves IF the game ever gets a sequel (might be it does not. The ending kinda gave a feeling that now we have a reality where everything might turn better than the first time, we will leave the rest to your imagination).

Ok, then just go knock yourself out. The main game is solid. If you wanna feel big dick, try Steal on random enemies and try staying put on different locations to see if there are different enemies. Some enemies carry weapons that you can only steal at that point of game and if you dont, you can only buy them later. For the start of game this can give you nice good edge becasue the weapons are stronger and you can equip more materia.

So you are saying it aged just fine and people overestimate how spoiled the game should be? Honestly though, other than the fact that it would have been cool to see the game in HD, there isn't anything on the top of my head that I would say doesn't meet today's standard of what would be a good game.

The need for a fucking cursor over your character to determine where you fucking are in the badly designed, grainy areas where you don't even know which direction you can go in

I didn't play it as a kid and recently played it on PC with the cheats on.
It's definitely not perfect but there's so much to like that I can really see why people became obsessed with its world and characters. I enjoyed it a lot but only because I had the 3x cheat. It makes all the tediously long parts like the fight fade in and some cutscenes bearable.
