The original is still approachable enough to be playable and fun for almost everyone, and it's not old enough to have visually aged as harshly as the original trilogy (I like pre rendered backgrounds as much as the next guy but the resolutions man). Where you'll have people clearly preferring either classic RE 2 vs REmake 2, a RE4 remake is just a pointless lateral move that most fans don't really want resources wasted on.

Functionally it's fine, still enjoyable as a game but it ain't Resident Evil. I attribute most of it's sales to the gameplay being at least decent.
