If you make a likable character that is fun, smartly written, relevant to the setting/plot, and/or simply unique or exotic, people will like them anyways.
The reason people bitch and moan about Soldier 76 (other than seething Yas Forums slideposters) is because he had just about zero character beforehand, and they made him gay later for seemingly no reason. He's already boring and flat, and before they developed him beyond "I'm a soldier who fights for the Overwatch", they also made him longing for his ex-husband, when he otherwise has shown zero romantic interest in anybody and his obsession with military struggles is all-consuming otherwise.

People will think whatever depending on what they believe on, that's not yours to control.
As a content creator, what you need to keep in mind is not "is this forced or not" is that the quality of your product doesn't change depending on the characters sexuality or gender, if the product is bad, it was bad despite the representation, if it's good, is good despite the representation.
You don't need to create a mastermind in order to justify putting a minority as a character, but your product is not automatically good just for putting it in, it also isn't inmune to criticism.
