also, watch the e3 video of snakes reveal. that level of hype pretty much captures the feeling that was happening here. when pokemon trainer was announced, almost the entire catalog was just OP's with the color red

Most gaming websites crashed at the news. It didn't help that the announce trailer was incredibly exciting (for the time) and came in blasting one of the best themes in the series as Sonic beat the shit out of everyone.
