Ninja are sometimes (but rarely) depicted with a wrist/arm protector that can vary in size and thickness. Yuffie has the biggest I've ever seen in a ninja-inspired design. It's comically oversized and thus impractical.

The only other ninja character I know with a particularly large Tekko is Recca. I don't know if they share the same unknown inspiration or if Yuffie was inspired from his unusual design. It's an old manga that used to be relatively popular when FF7 came out.
