It doesn't hold up. Barring the most primitive fps like Wolfenstein 3D, GoldenEye has probably aged the worst of all the 90's fps. Everybody knows this. Yet whenever anyone rightfully criticizes GoldenEye for its garbage gameplay, the typical counter-argument is that it revolutionized FPS because of a handful of features, which isn't even true:
>NPCs in an FPS Already done in Strife, released in 1996. You could even choose your dialogue choices when talking with them
>Sniper rifle with scope view Already done in Outlaws, released earlier in 1997, nearly half a year before GoldenEye
>Location-based damage Already done in Team Fortress, released in 1996
>Mission objectives Already done in any number of FPS released years before GoldenEye: Dark Forces I & II, Strife, Terminator: Future Shock, Skynet, the Marathon series, System Shock and Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri.
So why is there still this mass delusion that GoldenEye is an amazing game and a cherished classic?
Nobody has heard of any of those other games you mentioned. They probably suck or don't exist.
Caleb Cooper
It had far more advanced AI than any other FPS at the time and all of those features you had to pull from several different games as examples. You'd have to be an actual retard to not understand why it's so liked.
Sebastian Wilson
GoldenEye niggers have always been utterly delusional.
GoldenEye 007 didn't age well. It's pseudo-sequel blew it out of the water in every technical aspect.
No surprise interest in it faded.
Jose Perez
Goldeneye exploded in popularity because it was the first actually playable and enjoyable multiplayer first person shooter on consoles. OP is talking about PC games when PC was a very niche platform when it came to gaming.
Source: I was a teenager back in 1997.
Jason Ramirez
>and all of those features you had to pull from several different games as examples. And? How is that relevant? I mean, you can't even jump or swim in GoldenEye, basic features that had been commonplace in FPS by the time GoldenEye came out.
Jaxson Hall
>So why is there still this mass delusion that GoldenEye is an amazing game and a cherished classic? Your ignoring the fact it was entirely judged back then as a console FPS all those games you mentioned are on PC. Similar to Halo it was a big deal at the time because it was a big leap forward for console FPS. Consoles and PC were 2 entirely separate entities and audiences with very little overlap nothing like we have today. PC gamers didn't care about at all but most console gamers rarely ever touched a PC game and console shooters in general sucked besides a few good PC ports of PC FPS like the PS1 ports Doom/Duke 3D.
Does any of that make it good by todays standards? No it does not but your coming from a very uneducated perspective implying everyone cared or even knew about PC FPS but most console gamers didn't even know those games existed aside from aforementioned console ports which were generally far inferior to the PC versions.
>And? How is that relevant? I mean, you can't even jump or swim in GoldenEye, basic features that had been commonplace in FPS by the time GoldenEye came out. As I just explained in my entire post ON PC. You have to look at it from a perspective of console games at the time and how far separated PC/Console gaming were.
Jose Roberts
But GoldenEye was bad even compared to console FPS like Turok.
Nicholas Flores
Goldeneye was like the pokemon of fps for n64. you're underage so you probably dn't understand
Angel Rodriguez
>op thinks “inventing” a mechanic is the same as being revolutionary retard >op insists Goldeneye has aged badly to make up for own inability to think critically to find positives and negatives in everything ultra retard >op claims people who disagree are just deluded seething retard
Tyler Hughes
Good level design and stage based structure without healing inside of stages made the action more fun and feel more realistic than healthpack shooters
>magical armor with the uncanny ability to negate the deadly effect of bullets >"realistic" Based retard.
Also, the vast majority of healthpack shooters are sci-fi/fantasy so their use of such mechanics is actually more plausible than GoldenEye.
Noah Edwards
Being able to jump doesn't necessitate dedicated platforming sections, you piece of dumb shit. It simply allows level design to be more varied and complex and more vertical, because areas can be designed around the player's ability to jump. The same applies to the ability to swim, which was present in those PC FPS, but again, bizarrely absent in GoldenEye.
Christian Young
>basic mobility any human possesses is bad >vertical level design is bad >being able to jump over a waist high fence is bad Is this the level of intelligence of the GoldenEye fanbase?
Tyler Miller
Did you know that Bullet Proof Vests exist in real life?
Robert Edwards
>bullet proof vest prevents bullets from killing the wearer Yes that is the idea in reality and in Goldeneye.
Oliver Allen
Why attack Goldeneye rather than defend Turok? Oh right because Turok is shit which was my point
Owen Rogers
This is so stupid. Swimming and jumping aren't in Doom either and that's the best FPS ever made.
Zachary Rodriguez
all those literally who games. everyone was having absurd amounts of fun playing this game when it came out. no one gives a fuck about your post mortem analysis. no one would have given a fuck about it at the time either.
Alexander Cook
>nobody has heard of Strife, Outlaws, Dark Forces, System Shock, nor Marathon
>This is so stupid. Swimming and jumping aren't in Doom either Because it's a 2D Dos game, retard. Swimming and jumping are in Quake, Unreal, Duke Nukem 3D and basically any post-Doom FPS.
Carson Smith
Only GREGOR has played those games
Caleb Foster
>Because it's a 2D Dos game, retard >Quake and Duke 3D aren't DOS games
Nathan Nelson
Of course it doesn't hold up. I can't believe there are autists who throw a shit fit every time someone brings up the idea of games aging. Of fucking course games age.
I played it a couple of weeks ago and I think it is still really good. The only real downside to the game is the low framerate, but you get used to that after 10-15 minutes or so.
I don't give a shit if it only did what other games had already done. It set the standard of what to expect
Brody Nguyen
ge retexture project coming soon lads
keeping a low profile to avoid lawjannies until then
Why do people pretend System Shock is good? It has worse combat than Wolfenstein 3D.
Connor Flores
>I don't give a shit if it only did what other games had already done. It set the standard of what to expect You mean the billions of boring, slow, modern military shooters we have had shoved down our throats over the past 20 years?
Yes, thank god for Goldeneye.
Alexander Kelly
Yeah. Your'e right. >So why is there still this mass delusion that GoldenEye is an amazing game and a cherished classic? Because people who grew up with n64 are nostalgic for it, and they didn't have better comparable games to compare it to.
James Ramirez
>Why do people pretend System Shock is good? The enhanced edition uses mouselook and wasd like any modern shooters, so it unironically has more fluid gameplay than goldeneye.
COPE.
Adrian Evans
god damn I have to look at the original pic for several seconds to not see this
John Rivera
You posted the same thing on /vr/ and it got deleted. Seek help.
Lucas Reed
No those don't have the same kind of gameplay at all. The only thing that plays like Goldeneye is Time Splitters 2 and Perfect Dark.
