Shadow, 06, and Forces are the holy trinity of shit.
Shadow was the first truly bad Sonic game. It took the worst part of heroes, the mission system, and centred the entire game around it. It's much more fun to go from point A to point B than it is to hunt down and kill every single last alien, but the ending you get for that is shit. Also, the ending you choose doesn't matter, since there's a last story which is the canonical ending.
Sonic 06 is known for being bad, moving on.
Sonic Forces was a pure kick to the balls. They showed us all these returning villains, but the one who had the most impact (Zavok) could've easily been cut out with no loss to the story whatsoever. Chaos was just pure false advertising, as he did nothing but ruin Tails' character. The new villain's backstory was fucking stupid, too. He's Virginfinite who got assmad after getting his shit kicked in by Chadow. They also bought back Classic Sonic, but his stages sucked absolute horsecock. Most of the music was very hit or miss, with that one stupid synth showing up all the time.
I'm not counting Boom in this holy trinity of shit because it was a spin-off series. If I did, though, it would replace Shadow.

There are other missions in Shadow too, you know. Just play to Sky Troops and branch from there.

Destroy the ship to go to GUN Fortress, get to the end to go to Black Comet.

Reach the end before Sonic to go to Final Haunt. Reach the end after Sonic to go to Cosmic Fall.
The only time you have to go through and hunt down and kill every last enemy then is for Black Comet's Dark mission. Aside from that, it's smooth sailing.
