Sony feared being called a Smash clone so they knee-capped the gameplay. People still called it a Smash clone.

every console can have their smash and kart clones and no one would bat an eye, they are incredibly fun genres
it's a goofy concept, so the game needed to be goofy
gameplay needed to be simple enough, so you could play with your girlfriend and still lose from time to time
but no, they just made it like other fighting game, so it was just bland
It was rushed, had no budget and was made more as an advertisement for new series than an actual grand gesture to all popular series on the PlayStation, Activision were asking too much for the games budget so we couldn't get Crash or Spyro, Dirk was gonna be in but he was cut for time and budget purposes, also a lack of weebshit missed out on some fun contrast with the rest of the cartoony and realistic cast, I wanted kids, dudebros and weebs to all come together for this slap fest.
The gameplay was good but it lacked direction, it had smash style platforming combat but it required the all-star kill moves, which really fucked around with the balance and general fun you could have with each character.
I would gladly buy a sequel that has more love and time put into it.
I honestly believe this doing poorly hurt the brand as a whole and was a precursor to the shitty and boring branding style PlayStation has now.
PlayStation never gets anything fun anymore, it's so generic and barely even feels like a company anymore.
The contrast of different series is what I really liked about the game and PlayStation as a whole.
