Snes hardware was shit, genesis demoscene is way more impressive than anything on the snes. It's a shame because the shitty cpu really held back a lot of games, especially shmups.

Still better than these hunks of shit. At least the SNES had good games.

>TFW the demoscene is dead

nes had good games wtf u on about

SNES and Genesis were perfectly complementary. If you didn't have both you were missing out.

genesis just has better games and better hardware, especially the sound hardware.

This, they had what the other was missing.

>genesis has action genres like run and guns, shmups, etc
>snes has platformers, rpgs and puzzle games
They fit perfectly together.

No, it had potentially good games that suck shit because they're on the NES. Try playing a difficult platformer with tons of slowdown and constantly flickering sprites whenever there's more than three objects on the screen, and tell me you're having fun.

Good thing emulators can fix that.

had much fun with my nes many years ago. coming from c64 it was the best. super mario bros, bubble bobble. no loading. very nice.

>>snes has platformers, rpgs and puzzle games
all these genres are well represented on the Genesis.

Genesis had a few good RPGs like Phantasy Star but couldn't hope to compete with the SNES's variety.

And it had platformers and puzzle games. Shit, the Genesis had the best platformers at the time. The only competition on the SNES is a game nobody played.

The SNES had a much wider variety of good games.

Also, only a handful of Genesis games had soundtracks that didn't sound like lierally ass juice being squirted between two buttcheeks.

>soundtracks that didn't sound like lierally ass juice being squirted between two buttcheeks.
Dunno man SNES music is pretty farty and bland. Every good song on the system sounds like a hyper compressed version of a better song. No style or texture to it.

Genesis music typically sounds shrill and sharp. It's rare that a Genesis game isn't so screechy that it makes your ears bleed, but when a game avoids that trap its music sounds really crisp and clear.
Genesis music also has the edge when it comes to percussion though.

In other words Genesis music has highs and lows in terms of pitch and instrumentation, SNES has neither

one of the primary reasons I can't play Genesis games

Emulators and hardware clones fuck up the music. Real hardware with the original model sounds great.

It depends. I think the SNES is better in terms of instrumental variety which is good for the pseudo-orchestral stuff RPGs loved to play. Good developers were able to make good-sounding samples for that stuff.

Still? I thought Genesis emulation would be a solved problem by now.

If they had good samples, SNES shat on the Genesis sound.

It all sounds very similar thanks to the aggressive compression. PS1 ended up realizing the snes sound chip concept far better. Lots of good compositions became bland on the SNES.

Yeah She's sounds far better than mega drive, youtu.be/YSvmTmwRrZU vs youtu.be/74Q0iQZG4SA

You definitely felt like the SNES was being held back.
The SNES had more variety, but suffered from low quality - the Genesis had few instruments it could play well, but they were all crystal clear.

the genesis has a better soundchip

Deal with it.

Post as many different games as this with good soundtracks. Fight me.

The issue is that the Genesis uses an FM synth chip and it doesn't sound correct when emulated. Also, a lot of bad Genesis soundtracks were made using shitty sound drivers, notably the GEMS sound driver. When a soundtrack for the system is made with the hardware's strengths in mind (notably, using it as a synthesizer rather than trying to make it sound like other instruments), it sounds fine.

I'm talking about the soundchip here
The one on the SNES just sounds muddy and muted, I'm not talking about the quality of the compositions

I can't tell if you're trying to disprove my point or not, cause both of those tracks sound like ass leakage.

mega drive has much better tunes than snes. snes is good for twee faggot shit like jrpg nonsense. secret of mana is ok i guess but md had thunderforce iv. metal squad is for real men.

Lots of those games are shit and aren't worth playing. Literacy of the Genesis library is demonstrably low on this board.

I agree. But all that potential is wasted if there were only a handful of games with good music. It's the same argument about a console being more powerful than another, but has no games. What matters is content.

Not having the first 3 MMX games is a pretty loss, I literally bought a SNES just to play X1 again. Super Metroid is also godlike if you count that as a platformer.

It's not hard to get decent music out of the SNES because it uses pre-recorded samples. That makes it a lot more diverse and easier to get the "right" sounds out of. The Genesis is actually producing the sounds itself and is limited by the capabilities of an 80s synth chip. It's good at making electronic sounding synth music, but it isn't all that versatile.

What everyone seems to be missing here is that the soundchips were designed with different end results in mind. Nintendo wanted better bass and Sega wanted better treble. Pay attention to SNES games known for their music and Genesis games known for their music. You will notice a distinct difference in Bass and Treble between the systems, to further prove this, look at cross platform games with shitty sound on either system but ok or fine sound on the other and you will really pick up on the differences as there are cases where ported games just didn't sit in the oven long enough for even an attempt at changing the sound to fit a particular sound chip better.

TL:DR
SNES produces better bass, Genesis produces better treble.

Snes really holds mmx back with how hard it slows down. Mmx didn't really hit its stride mechanically until x4. The earlier games feel way too sluggish in comparison.

Music could have also been better on Genesis. Thankfully someone is remaking it.

MMX4 feels way more sluggish than the earlier games because of its animation windup and larger sprites.
MMX1-3 would probably have been better games on the Genesis though. It's an odd choice because they don't particularly benefit from the SNES hardware.

Don't see how larger sprites, a psuedo-3D perspective that makes judging your jumps more difficult, and floatier physics make the game faster. Trying playing X2 with shit like speed burner and the strike chain and you'll see immediately how much faster the SNES games are. It's an almost night and day difference even with the slowdown in mind, which is honestly not that big of an issue.
