Not very good. Taura seemed to take a cue from Nier Automata in that the game's focus is on story and presentation rather than gameplay, but that story/presentation is lacking the kind of gravitas that allows that to work for Taro's games, instead of something totally new and interesting and mysterious it's just a ripoff of Eva with stands thrown in.

The combat doesn't feel as tight as it should, your main character has a single attack button to mash similar to MGR but you can't cancel attacks into dodges so it feels sluggish. Dodges also don't have many/complete i-frames so playing reactively is heavily discouraged.

The Stands are kind of unwieldy to use which is why they auto-attack when out. Enemies don't respond much to attacks so the combat winds up becoming a skill-fest. Blue shield so you can be invincible for a while, Wolf ride so you can be invincible forever, chain bind to hold enemies, Wolf how to hold/stun enemies, you're basically using as much mez as possible to avoid typical P* combat.

If you adore Nier Automata and don't mind a P* game where combat is one of the weakest elements maybe give it a rent and see if the story does it for you, but for me this game commits terrible mistakes even from the word go. The first two stages are not fun on purpose because you don't have your powers yet. I disagree strongly with that decision and it's emblematic of the decisions made throughout the dev process.

It didn't play like any other platinum action game that's for sure but once you get used to the change it becomes absolutely fantastic.

It's solid and the combat is rather unique which is refreshing. I think a sequel where they can build on this base would be awesome.

Better than any bosses in the Bayonetta games that’s for sure

7.5/10 game. It's a better "total package" game than it is an action game, which is just about the only thing going for it compared to Platinum's other titles which are highly focused on their combat. The issue is that the story itself in AC is pretty bad and it's carried by characters, visuals, music, and the concepts it brings to the gameplay like the Legions and the investigation stuff.

Combat is a struggle in AC. The game heavily encourages fighting in tandem with your Legion, and while keeping the spacial awareness of the player up and making them multitask to get their best results are good ideas, it's executed in a mediocre way. Rankings are skewed towards doing the cool Legion moves instead of performing well (using healing items and not using healing items both give point bonuses) or being efficient. Akira's three weapons are extremely simplistic and each Legion only has complexity once you go into menu after menu to customize their skillset after dumping currencies into a skill tree.

The level design also tells me that Taura wishes he had Automata's budget but didn't. Each file feels like it was meant to be a chunk of a proper open world, complete with areas you're supposed to backtrack to hours later in the story once you get a particular Legion. There's missable cases and secret bosses hidden everywhere and those would be fine if you weren't penalized for missing them when half of them aren't even possible for you on your first run.

All that said, I really want to fuck Alicia, Marie, & Brenda.

You're not wrong that the Bayo games have a lot of bad bosses, but I'll take Jeanne, Alruna, and Rodin over playing AC.

The best set of bosses in a Platinum game are Devastation followed by Revengeance (the Metal Gears themselves are pretty mediocre fights despite the spectacle being great for Ray).

They made a lot of bad decisions. Some people will like the story despite it being really cliche and meandering, some people will like the slower-paced less-technical combat.

I'm not one of those people. To me this game is shockingly bad and unpolished for a P* title.

Never played Nier or Infinite Space. Anarchy Reigns deserves a re-release with balance changes, new characters, and better online, because it's a fantastic setup and melee-based multiplayer games are on the rise (see Shinobi Strikers, Bleeding Edge, and Ninjala coming out within roughly a year of each other).

It's a fine game but it's not really the style of action game that people really expect or want from Platinum. I think most people went in expecting some real MGR shit and just got a weird little action RPG type thing instead.

Which I don't mind. I kind of dislike how Platinum kind of became known as the DMC clone developer, the people working there have done a good variety of games and I wish we'd see more attempts at different genres or styles of gameplay.

Bayonetta allows the player to ignore the loop the devs wanted you to use and instead play it like a juggle simulator. People who hate Bayo 2 were mad that they had to use the mechanics the devs intended them to use because they never really liked the ideas to begin with and couldn't hack real reactive play.

MGR is also purely reactive play and can't be cheesed with million-year-long air combos.

This person clearly prefers easier games and games where he can autistically juggle.

I would venture a guess to say that this person also loves the Tales Of series but thinks that Xillia 2, one of the worst abominations in jRPG existence, is the best in the series.
