More people will have played the new game than the original and any discussion of FF7 now will be drowned out by the zoomers who outnumber us. It's impossible to discuss the old game and story now and I'm jaded as fuck because the same shit just happened with RE2 and RE3 being remade. All my old childhood games are getting remade so zoomers can enjoy them and it results in more people playing the new games than the old, which kills discussion of the old.

To put some context on my statement, I first played a Final Fantasy game around 1990. There is a not insignificant chance I am the oldest person reading this thread. FF7 did absolutely nothing special or new when it came out almost a decade later, aside from the 3D graphics and videos that were not possible on earlier platforms. The story of FF7 is not the best FF story. It was just flashier than what had been released at that time. It gained a lot of momentum by being one of the first major PS games to really get the combination of prerendered sets and animated 3D actors right after the console had attained a sizable market penetration. It was heavily advertised for a video game and quickly became the face of FF as Squaresoft capitalized on the success and doubled down on the advertising.
FF7 got popular because it was the first FF game to be popular due to a perfect storm of circumstance, not the first one to be good. You don't make it to seven titles without the prior releases being quality. FF7 is like Evangelion. Most of the people that think it is the best just didn't have anything better to compare it to before experiencing it.
