I mean it's pretty fucking cool to see all these old areas re-imagined with modern graphics, but there's something so hallow and lifeless about it, much like FF13 and FF15.

It's the dungeons. Each dungeon is an hour's worth of FF13-tier hallways. The towns are pretty cool, especially Wall Street.

Dude, fucking no. There's people everywhere, fully voiced, tons of different sub-areas and shops, the new characters are very inspired choices.
FFXIII had no towns to roam in and FFXV had no personality (aside from Altissia)

I genuinely loved every moment of it, especially the 'ending', which I want to see the ongoing plot threads of. I don't understand the dislike; so it's a stealth (time travel) sequel/continuation of the franchise after AC and Dirge left them nowhere to go, Gackt being a little bitch. So what? Honestly, a loyal remake of a game I've already played a dozen times is only good to see the events/scenes in modern graphics, but beyond that there is nothing appealing in it. This allows new stories.

I know, cool to see. I have played more than a handful of games though, so surface-level stuff like that is just extra to me. I'm more interest in substance.

I don't know man, just felt like MMO hubs to me. It lacks the immersive feel of some other great RPGs I've played.
I get that you're really excited to finally have that remake, I am too, but I can't help but think if this remake came out for the first time right now and the original Final Fantasy 7 never existed, this game would be seen as the more standard 7/10 that it is.

So far it's an 8/10. Squeenix desperately needs to hire some genuinely talented level designers, though. Their dungeon designs have been stupidly rudimentary since FFX.

Their "level design" is non-existent. It's just a short filler hallway as a means to get you from cutscene A to cutscene B. The towns and story segments in Final Fantasy have both always been the high points of each game.

Very true, but it shouldn't be this way. There's an entire dimension of RPG design that they simply refuse to touch for some inexplicable reason (in fact, outside of Blobbers, JRPGs in general have half-assed their dungeon design for quite some time now.)

I never hated it. I didn't like it but hate is too strong. And I liked the combat and music, I just didn't like exploration (lol) and the story. 2 out of 4 isn't terrible. FFXV is far, far worse.
