What's the genuine appeal of this genre? Storytelling is piss poor, characters don't behave like human people and it tries to be deep by appealing to themes about godhood or evil in general in the most shallow way possible. Also a lot of filler that doesn't respect characters nor players. Is it just popular with people who want to indulge in simplistic power fantasy?

Its casual and easy to play, while appealing to midwits who claim to care about stories, but can't be fucked to read a book.

I like 'em because the story is usually great, the characters behave very organically, the themes about godhood or evil are usually handled very well, and the filler helps flesh out the characters in fun and different ways.

because im gay

If you are 7 y/o, then sure

So which genre is your favorite, OP? Because I sure as fuck can shit talk on it as well.

Nah, I'm 34.

>RTS (think Stronghold or Supreme Commander)
>Immersive sim (think Thief, Deus Ex or Dishonored)
>Turn-based strategy (Heroes 3 and its clones)

Based fellow brainless gamer

yikes

I was hoping for the real shit talk, it seems you can't even form any arguments but then again what can I expect from a jrpg fan

>immersive sim
Is THAT what their calling it now?

>immersive sim
So stealth?

What can I say? You just seem to be a very boring person. I find when someone says they like both rts and turn-based strategy games, AND they like action-adventure games on top of that, they tend to be pretty brainless. In fact, you probably like jrpgs yourself. Also quick note, but liking rts and turn-based games doesn't make you seem smarter btw

I like turn based combat, focus on fun characters, and a nice art style
Usually that's what I get when I play JRPGs

>>RTS (think Stronghold or Supreme Commander)
Dead genre for a reason, they're all trash. Peaked over a decade ago. Move on.
>>Immersive sim (think Thief, Deus Ex or Dishonored)
Walking simulators, got it.
>>Turn-based strategy (Heroes 3 and its clones)
Literally flash game tier.

Honestly masochism, slow grind shit that I like until I play it again and want to play an actual game like if people like the genre though that's cool, better than being a pedo[hile i suppose

People like watching number pop on the screen I guess

Forgot to mention, don't be a faggot and use immersive sim. If you have to hide behind something like that, you shouldn't use it in an argument in the first place.

>dumpster a genre that has hundreds of games of varying styles and themes because you don't like the genre
>cherrypick examples of genre you do like
Why not have just posted without examples?

fun skinner box gameplay loop. like pokemon. bonus points if they keep weeb shit to a minimum (or maximum if you're a faggot). that's about it.

>>Walking simulators
Nigger Have you played any of them? RPG's literally are walking around and busywork. In dishonored you can be stealthy or murder hobo and you have super powers guns and swords all at the same time. plus rpg leveling elements based game desu

I don't hate fun like you seem to.

>props up chrono trigger and final fantasy as examples
>quietly pushes SMT and dragon quest into the shadows because playing them with ME MAKE NUMBER BIG won't get you past the first boss
Are you perhaps a gaming journalist?

I call them immersive sims because of the agency they give to the player. Bioshock is also an immersive sim in a way but it isn't a stealth game per se. And I am not a big fan of stealth games, I just like some of them because of the freedom they give.

I know people laugh at the term but it is valid and works well in communicating what it is about.

>>walking around and busywork
Nigger Have you played any of them? Walking simulators literally are walking around and busywork. In FF7 you can get stronger off of mobs or exploit weaknesses and you have super powers guns and swords all at the same time. plus rpg leveling elements based game desu

>Bioshock is also an immersive sim
please be bait

>DUDE I HATE RPGS
>BUT DUDE THIS GAME HAS RPG LEVELING ELEMENTS
so uh, which is it friend?
or you can man up and just say you hate anime and we can all leave this thread in peace

You know people who like jrpgs can also like other genres right? I’ll play just about anything while falling back on jrpgs as my favorite genre.

SMTfag here, how does DQ handle their bosses?

never in my life have i seen anyone call deus ex a walking simulator

because you literally run by default

>Storytelling is piss poor
as compared to what, Divinity: Original Cringe and Dragon Age: Bored Again?

fpbp

they are just fun to play
holy FUCK normal fags need to get back to work.

Pretty much SMT with training wheels
Buffs and debuffs are very important
Most end game bosses will be taking two turns and attacking the entire party at once

never in my life have I seen Deus ex called a "immersive sim"

rent free

I don't know if Warren Spector coined the term "immersive sim" but he definitely calls Deus Ex an immersive sim. So it's weird that you never heard the creator of Deus Ex calling it an immersive sim.

I can agree that BioShock is a stretch though.

the term was literally coined by warren spector talking about deus ex

it's literally the ur-example of an immersive rim you brain damaged hyper mongoloid retard
