was old minecraft really better or are we blinded by nostalgia?
Was old minecraft really better or are we blinded by nostalgia?
I'd say a mix of both, leaning more on the nostalgia side.
It was the first in the genre and crafted decently. It wasn't a janky fucking mess like the DayZ mod for the survival genre.
Game didn't change much, it's peoples perspective on life that changed more.
>was old minecraft really better
yes
nothing added since early beta has been good and, even if the old core is still there, the game is a bloated mess of faggot shit like boss-fights, squidward NPCs, enchantments and other garbage that does nothing but distract from the actual game
it was better because it was simpler and the mods that people created for it had more depth and built more community than the patchwork mess of the later builds.
>nostalgia
>for Minecraft
yeah, beta was like 8 or 9 years ago, i would call it nostalgia.
It was better graphically. Lighting felt a lot earthier and had more muted colors, the graphics didn’t seem to glitch and as much, and there was no gay eating mechanic.
it had more coherent game design for sure. minecraft has been far too bloated for a while now. i personally didnt like the game after b1.8 due to the changes in the flow of gameplay, but i still think it was a good, well-designed game up until 1.7-1.8ish. it just started to have too much shit and not nearly enough polisg
Updates have gotten even more predictable and dare I say soulless. It's a new biome, new creatures, reworking something that didn't need it. Every update has only one or two features that actually add anything of value, and no update in years has been super interesting by itself.
World generation was better for sure.
It's nostalgia for me, but I was playing pre-alpha in high school with my friends so it's more than the game I'm missing about it now.
Can't you play previous versions from the launcher? If so this bitching is pointless.
You can do precisely that
>Currently, snapshots, Alpha, Beta, and all release versions are available to play. Four Pre-classic versions, four Classic versions, and one Infdev version are available under the name "old_alpha". No Indev versions are currently available from the launcher.
No. The ability to play previous versions means there is no problem. The bitching however is valid.
Define the actual game
I never stopped playing but I got bored of vanilla Minecraft a long time ago.
1.7.10 was definitely the golden age for mods but 1.12.2 is still pretty good with tons of mods and it's mostly what I play nowadays.
These threads always have a lot of complaints and longing, but never offer any actual solutions
You're given complete control over Minecraft's development and the direction it takes from 1.16 forward. You can propose anything, even that which requires massive overhauls to the engine's current boundaries
What do you do Yas Forums?
I feel like the terrain generator was less refined which led to more interesting areas
Buy cough syrup with my salary and get fired once my lack of productivity is clear.
The updates have really just been boring as fuck one note mobs, areas, blocks, etc. They really needed something natural and impactful like the aether.
For one, pick up the goddamn pace.
It had a better generator but official 1.7 fixed it.
1. Create an open source modding API
2. Release it to the public
3. All future updates must not break mods. Any developer caught transgressing this rule will be castrated by rusty salad tongs
/thread, game will fix itself now
Have hunger mechanic become a toggle-able feature, so you can use the original healing/food mechanic.
Have the combat overhaul become a toggle-able feature, so you can use the original combat style. (and make the skeletons not some hit-scan bulshit that they currently are)
Have the ability to build the portal to the end rather than going on a 4000+ block treck to find the fortress that has a seemingly 80% chance to be completely FUCKED by terrain generation and broken.
Have a setting to spawn in the neather instead of the over-world.
colored lighting, farming updates, seasons

this is a mod
it should be STANDARD
Literally nothing an official update could release could ever possibly hope to outdo mods. Therefore the only sensible course of action is to refactor the game to officially support mods, and make it so official updates don't break them in the future
Fuck hunger
The fact that mods exist doesn’t excuse bad design.
Both. The post-Alpha/Beta additions don't actually feel like they have enough impact on the core game, they're just bloat.
Why add more weapons and enchants without making the combat deeper than just spam right click?
Why add more enemy mobs that don't pose new and interesting threats?
Why add more biomes without also giving us a reason to go back and visit them past the initial unique resource gathering visit?
Why go the RPG route and add hunger if you're not also going to do thirst/temperature/tiredness/etc.?
>The fact that mods exist doesn’t excuse bad design.
actually it does. As long as you officially support mods and never break them. That's the only problem with official updates.
the game's development took a sharp left turn when the Wolves debacle happened in the Beta 1.4 update.
We waited months for Notch to add meaningful content and all he did was spend 5min recoding sheep.
From then on, people started seeing through his bullshit, spending 18 months on an update that added 1 or 2 minor blocks or features that we already had in mods.
This.
Prepping to fight the dragon literally involves 10's of hours afk grinding at a mob XP grinder to try and get the right enchanments via RNG.
Ever since potions and enchanting was added it's slowed down the game.
You no longer start mining every diamond you see at the start of the game because you know in your mind it's not worth touching them until you get Fortune III on a gold pickaxe.
Also you dont realize how dark the nights actually were until you go back and play Beta or Alpha, not to mention how difficult the game actually was when you couldn't just sleep through the night, or when respawning meant running from the original spawnpoint (instead of your bed)
hunger mechanic is only applicable to hardcore difficulty or better yet just remove it completely.
remove the travelling jew since they add nothing besides the free leash.
bring back the old world generator
Mining, crafting and exploring.
Nothing's been added since Alpha that's affected any of these things. In fact updates have detracted from them.

Wipe all progress past Beta 1.7.3 and add Tekkit, Mo Creatures and Millenaire to the base game.
/thread
there hasn't been a boss fight added in for years.. all of the recent updates have been focusing on improving existing game things such as ocean.
The villages you complain about are part of exploration and a lot of the update in recent years are centered around exploration.
