I’ve said this in a few previous threads, but I played XII for the first time recently with very few expectations or prior knowledge. I found the gameplay flawed but interesting, the world was top notch, the characters were awful, which dragged down an otherwise intriguing story. It was a pretty clear indication to me that Square has been a bumbling clusterfuck for even longer than I thought

None of the lead dev team was part of the FF series. They came from Vagrant Story, which still is one of the best game of all time and they made an ambitious JRPG that even western RPGs was inspired from. Meanwhile the FF team made the FF10/13 fiasco that only inspired the linear movie corridor era.
