Stagnation. Newer Pokemon gens feel almost identical to each other, and being the biggest media franchise of all time gives Game Freak and Nintendo the mentality of "why should we improve when people eat this shit up anyways?"

The Pokemon Company International being there to keep the franchise machine rolling and putting the harsh yearly release schedule in place, combined with the fact GameFreak is still adamant on keeping their team small for that "indie feel" while having the biggest franchise on the globe and refusing to expand and grow as a company. Their sheer incompetence is finally becoming more obvious to people, but at the same time people still buy it so they have no real reason to.

Releasing the Natdex through DLC, I've already had to jump through fucking hoops to get most legal Pokemon in previous gens, but I won't pay past actually buying the core game to complete a dex.
