It's not weird, it's a method of allowing you to be able to easily see and examine other characters even when the camera is pulled out. If the player character isn't small, you get the Arkham effect, where he blocks your own visibility.

The problem is NPC's didn't get scaled down to Link's level. An argument can be made for bigger monsters to create a David vs Goliath effect, but not for friendly npc's of the same race as the MC. It's just so jarring to play as an adult male character who is almost a full head shorter than women.
