Aeris was a better character in the original, I think a lot of Tifa's character development comes after the Gold Saucer and after Aeris dies.
The remake does a much better job fleshing out Tifa, that she's in to deep with Avalanche, and needs Cloud's help.
Where in the original game Tifa asks Cloud to save her of she's ever in trouble but she's never really in danger from Avalanche, as there's no moral ambiguity in the original, Shinra is bad and they are good period.
