the comic is canon and in the comic, infected see the world in a fugue like state. uninfected people look like monsters to them which is why they're so aggressive

I like the L4D2 Hunters because the skin on their legs is split from the overexertion of muscle use and they have scraped knees and elongated fingernails from the flesh on their fingers getting damaged

The infected are actually kind of mysterious. I think they're insane and the comics suggest they see uninfected as monsters. Some survivors speculate "they can talk." But that might be panic induced hysteria.

They gotta communicate somehow, even something like scent based makes sense, like ants

Half Life Zombies are parasite drones, whereas L4D zombies are infected with a virus.

What makes the L4D zombies just a tad bit scarier in my opinion is the fact a morbid amount of detail went into the real life effects of mania, the infected are so traumatised and mentally broken by the effects of the virus they damage and injure their own bodies, just like rabies would do.
