compressing the frame makes cooling more difficult. Giving components space makes heat dispersal easier, makes cleaning easier, reduces failures, etc.
the problem with making bottom intake is that is typically where the PSU is, which gives off it's own amount of heat. You could put the PSU near the top rear of the tower, but unless you added pointless weight to the bottom this would make it unbalanced.

heat's paramount of course but there are other important design considerations. Weight, size and dimensions. XBox has traditionally performed very poorly in japan for example because it's xbox hueg, and Sony has been able to consistently put out thin variants that can fit on shelves in tiny gook and chink shelves, for example. It's a race to see who can create the smallest unit able to interface with home furniture which is typically designed by retards at best

Box form is also more easily manufactured on a massive scale, and serviced more easily. Don't forget we're talking about a mass product here, not a personal rig. Assembly line efficiency will be a consideration for any such design
