If they had the balls to say "The game got delayed because we decided instead of a complete remake we wanted to try something crazy and do a reimaging of sorts to the original game and create a parallel game to the original with the same characters." instead of playing it off as it being faithful to the original and throwing this out of the blue i would probably be a little upset at first but have fun and at least attempt to enjoy the ride. But the way this was done feels like an insult to the original game and the actual fans of it. Especially how in your face it gets in the end. And the meta about the ghosts being the fans of the playstation game and Seph being the current writers is obvious as well. Just leaves a bad taste in your mouth that they sold you something you did not pay for.

Its easy to look back at those comments now in hindsight and see what they mean. But it just adds to the overall misdirection of it all. People knew going in there was gonna be small changes to just because of the nature of the game being split into parts and comments like that. But people were saying things like "Oh they will add in new characters maybe change a few smaller story details or maybe change some things in wall market to fit in with 20xx." But nobody saw them completely derailing from the main story plot like they did.

basically you have basic attacks that do negligible chip damage and sometimes the enemy's health doesn't even visibly move when you use them

the main reason to use basic attacks is to build up your ATB bars. You get two, and they're used to do basically any action that isn't a basic attack or limit break. Need to use an item? Costs 1 ATB bar. Want to summon Ifrit? Requires a full summon meter and costs 1 ATB bar. One to get Ifrit to use a certain special move on command? Costs both ATB bars. Wanna cast a spell or use a special move? You get the idea.

Anyways special moves and spells build up an enemy's stagger meter, kind of like an inverse stamina. Using skills and spells the enemy is weak to builds up this stagger meter further. Once the stagger meter is full the enemy is staggered and collapses to the floor for some time and is susceptible to taking a lot more HP damage and suddenly your basic attacks can actually make a good dent. Then they recover from stagger and repeat.

Debuffs and buffs like Barrier are also pretty important for higher difficulty encounters

Gameplay you can switch, world wandering is cloud only (for the majority, I can recall a minute interval where you play as Aerith for some reason)

I'm saying that even when IGN who is the biggest developer's and publisher's cumrag says in their official review
"some elements of this game can only be defined as Kingdom Hearts BS" you know there's a major problem with your game

This is true here but unless I'm playing like shit the character with the highest magic damage potential (Aerith) is one of the shittiest because to even get the opportunity to do magic damage you have to build ATB which she is absolutely dogshit at, and the AI is complete arse so you have to constantly switch back and forth to do anything meaningful with her. Tifa by comparison just absolutely wrecks shit with some of her physical skills alone so I can imagine making her into a mixed build would just wreck the game.

Yes, Tonberries can attack even fixed cut scene spots of the fight. Hard Mode also bans your items, so have fun!

Once you realise that in the second phase you just cast low level magic to its rotating weakness to skyrocket its stagger it's a lot easier.
And yeah I thought Ghoul was a shit fight too. He had a nasty habit of interrupting casting or going incorporeal a literal split second before the animation was finished, same with killing party members a split second before healing finishes meaning I waste a healing item or MP.

What shits me off most about those mid fight cutscenes is that they flat out cancel out attacks and limits. Hell House cancelled a Healing Wind I used half a second before the third phase cutscene started and it fucked me over big time.
