RE7 is one of the best Resident Evil's, and a shining example of how you revive a franchise.
Instead of relying on fan-service and doing callbacks to old RE, it strips it all down to the very basics and asks "What is Resident Evil actually about?" It's about some dude, stuck in a b-movie horror setting, trying to survive; that's how RE and Survival Horror started, and that's exactly what RE7 is.
So many modern franchises are obsessed with the established details, that they've forgotten why those details were beloved in the first place. People don't love Leon S. Kennedy because of his fucking 90's hairstyle, they love him because he's the protagonist of RE2 and RE4; the love of his hairstyle is just an extension of that, even if people don't realize it. Just because Leon and his iconic hairstyle appears in something doesn't mean its automatically good, but that the kind of trap so many franchises and fanbases fall into.
More sequels need to be like RE7: Faithful in the spirit of the law, not the letter.
>main character had no personality >unskippable cutscenes >molded >stalker enemy made for twitch streamers in mind >ugly character models No, it's Outlast with guns. It was babby's first "RE" game.
Wyatt Morris
>No, it's Outlast with guns.
No, it's Horror Far Cry without bullets.
Nolan Johnson
4 of those have in old RE andpeople loved it. >Muh outlast Oh he think his opinion matters, how cute

I absolutely hate how scripted it is. Its the only RE game that I've never played more than once because I hate the opening.
Connor Kelly
It's mediocre. REmake 2 is how you revive a franchise.
Lincoln Williams
>best RE >everything after the Baker estate is generic shit and completely forgettable, besides how bad it is
nah
William Martin
>You revive the franchise by making it worse than the original You REmake2 fags will be the new RE6 defense force arent you?
Christian Ward
>I absolutely hate how scripted it is. Its the only RE game that I've never played more than once because I hate the opening.
You couldn't stomach the scripting in RE7 but somehow was able to play RE6 more than once? RE6 literally has sections were you can press in any direction on the analog and the character will just walk forward no matter what.
Owen Edwards
RE7 was fantastic, but it should have been its own thing entirely. Should have kept it as just a guy in a farmhouse with a crazed fucked up family. Would have been a lot cooler than some psychic girl controlling them.
Zachary Rodriguez
NEW THREAD. FUCK THIS GAY THREAD
Leo Perez
Well you see, for RE6, for some reason they let you skip all the way to the last section of each chapter even on a new save. I beat it once legit on the 360, but when I re-bought it, I just warped my way to the end without playing 90% of it.
Easton Bennett
Never get the hateboner for the boat. After you get the second shotgun you are equivalent of having a magnum with lot so ammo in the old games,Removing the weapons in that part makes you worried and cautious again.i love it. Salt mines is just a last gauntlet of enemies soo i kinda understand the hate tough
Noah Brooks
>Everything after the first 90% of the game is bad Yes and?
Julian Russell
>Should have kept it as just a guy in a farmhouse with a crazed fucked up family. Would have been a lot cooler than some psychic girl controlling them.
I thought the idea of a sentient BOW that just wanted to have its own family was pretty cool, the "creepy little girl" shit was just boring and overdone.
Cooper Perez
>Salt mines is just a last gauntlet of enemies soo i kinda understand the hate tough
Salt mines are incredibly short and just the classic RE powertrip. The hate against RE going more action towards the end is dumb and misguided imo, it's a great way to establish how powerful you've become and that you're taking the fight back to them.
Parker Wright
This is actually my favourit part.
Adrian Thompson
People gooble zombies to this fucking day and wants more and more and its THE first horror trope that is boring and overdone. Give more ghost lolis please.
Jeremiah Ross
The ship segment after the flashback is peak survival horror.
Agree. That is IMO Why RE4 Works soo well despise starting the Full Action that ruined RE6 both RE4 and Re5 are more action oriented but it always leave in some situation that you look powerless and in disavantage.RE6 Not just blows everything in your face but makes the characters escape in such actiony way that you lost any sense of RE in the game.
Michael Lee
the dlc was also really good, especially the daughters part in banned footage.
Grayson Jackson
>>stalker enemy made for twitch streamers in mind You've clearly never played Haunting Ground. >>unskippable cutscenes Just like classic RE? >No, it's Outlast with guns. I find that people who say stuff like this are invariable third-person-fags.
Nathan Ramirez
Without this game we wouldn't have RE2Make so I'm glad it came out. As pointed out, the game is pretty scripted. Even watching a speedrun of the game has people constantly just sitting around while cutscenes play. However, I have to call out OP here. How does RE7 not rely on fan-service or callbacks to old RE? There's puzzles, strategic resource management, horror, bosses that have different stages/forms and keep coming back, absurd dialogue, Chris Redfield at the end, etc. I could go on. I know you're probably gonna say Chris Redfield wasn't fan-service because he looks nothing like Chris, but I'm gonna say that's what it was intended for anyway. All in all RE7 was good. Anybody who compares it to Outlast is a moron
Chase Edwards
Am I the only one that always hated the “Pursuer” concept that Capcom try to push into RE?
It turns the games from survival exploration games into a long winded chase where you don’t get to enjoy the atmosphere
Joseph Cruz
>stalker enemy I think Mr. X was a real redpill for the horror genre. the amount of tension and subsequent word of mouth it generates is too just to good to pass up, most of the backlash 3make has gotten is them fucking up the stalking aspect.
Luis Gutierrez
>it's a great way to establish how powerful you've become and that you're taking the fight back to them. I love how well RE7 do this >Ethan starts scared and worried >everytime he beats a boss he says what everyone is thinking´´Stay.fucking. dead`` >Last fight with black goo monster eyes Jack´´That is getting annoying Jack`` just says he doesnt give a fuck anymore seals the deal
Ethan is underrated because VR forced the First person all the time.I Really Hope if RE8 rumour are true,at least make the cutscenes in third person.
Josiah Lewis
>where you don’t get to enjoy the atmosphere Every re pursuer has really been pretty brief. Mr. X was only around for about 45 minutes or so outside of a few set pieces late in leon's run.
Leo Rivera
Third person cutscenes are terrible. You're making a game, not a movie.
James Russell
>both RE4 and Re5 are more action oriented but it always leave in some situation that you look powerless and in disavantage.RE6 Not just blows everything in your face but makes the characters escape in such actiony way that you lost any sense of RE in the game.
I agree.
I think the reason why RE4 is so beloved is because despite being an action game- it really sells the idea that Leon is in over his head and has everything stacked against him. There's a real sense of "out of the frying pan and into the fire" with the whole game, and it really makes you feel like a badass when you triumph over the horror. To me a good Action Horror game is all about tension and RE4 nails the tension.
RE5 sort of lacked this partly in thanks to co-op and action, and RE6 was just a jumbled tonal mess in general.
Needed to be more camp desu. RE7 is Evil Dead while the rest of the series is Evil Dead 2
Daniel Bell
Say that to the normies that need his pretty boy or bust babe doing action tricks to be likeable.
Jaxon Peterson
Hope they are following the Evil dead inspiration in the next RE numbered games RE8 Evil dead 2 RE9 Army of Darkness kek
Jonathan Bailey
I've come to dislike it. It was a fun concept to up the ante in 2 and 3, but then they retroactively added Lisa to 1 amd now it looks like every mainline is going to have one going forward.
Jeremiah Davis
>Am I the only one that always hated the “Pursuer” concept that Capcom try to push into RE?
I honestly think they're underutilised.
Being hunted by Jack in the mansion in RE7 is probably the best part of the game, but it's like maybe 1/5 of the total playtime.
Luke Cook
>the fps trilogy is the evil dead trilogy I'd be ok with that. I hope the ambassador feedback favored the Ash version of Ethan
Gabriel Lewis
I found RE7 to be like the funniest game in the franchise, most of the jokes were pretty low-key and I liked that.
Ayden Lee
No. This is a prime example of how to fuck up everything once good, and downgrade it so that it appeals to casual zoomie market.
Jackson Long
Agreed. Its the only part that really feels like RE with finally being able to kill some shit, finding all sorts of treasures and key cards on multiple floors instead of just hiding from invincible kooky grandpa abd grandma
Jason Morris
Ethan has some good one liners and a lpt of potential, but some of it is just kind of edgy that none of the other entries had. It doesn't help that the production values are also unironically higher than a lot of B movies. I kind of agree with the other user wanting skippable 3rd person cutscenes so we can see his reactions. I think that'd go a long way in helping to flesh him out, if done well.
Nathaniel Davis
Based OP
Zachary Robinson
>>main character had no personality ah yes, because Jill and Chris personalities in RE1 were...
Ethan Diaz
so fucking boring
Evan Barnes
Al these threads make me want to play RE7 again and work on the DLCs.
Brayden Perez
Me too, but my old roommate got the PS4 in the divorce. It's been painful.
Owen Hughes
Please play at least End of Zoe its really fun I personally loved Ethan must die and i hope they add not only this mode in RE8 but multiple maps too.The idea is really good
Kayden Morris
I fell asleep playing that game
Dominic Harris
Funny enough I was playing RE7 early today and I have to say, Jack is a much better ''pursuer'' than Mr X of of course that shitty RE3R Nemesis. He actually can destroy the fricking dinner table so you can't cheese him unlike X and Nemesis, why the fuck Capcom didnt do something similar to that in the remakes? Mr X being able to break those benches and Nemesis those tables at the restaurant would that have taken that much or /money of development? These games keep getting downgraded and missing some cool details
>There's puzzles, strategic resource management, horror, bosses that have different stages/forms and keep coming back, absurd dialogue, Chris Redfield at the end, etc.
Those are the very soul of classic RE games and it's hardly fanservice, as much as it is a faithful return to form to a classic survival horror root of RE games. Only fanservice in RE7 was the appearance of Chris and nu-Umbrella but even the dlc was mostly focused on Lucas more than anything else.
Jack Cooper
Yeah, I was saying how they're all callbacks to original RE, something OP said RE7 didn't rely on.
Jacob Wright
Agreed and I'm glad my first playthrough was in VR.
Besides the unskippable cutscenes and ugly character models, you're full of shit.
Lincoln Perry
But it really didn't though, as for the whole game, the game mostly focused on the Baker family and Chris was just there, appears on the ending and doing clean up duty, nothing more than that. The rest of the fanservice examples you mentioned were just old RE mechanics.
Landon Ortiz
I guess you could interpret it that way, but the fanservice I took as including so-and-so's favorite mainstay RE character and callbacks would be story tie ins, relationship building, or run into the ground in-jokes. Gameplay idea returns aren't the same and even if they were, wouldn't matter because they good things that should have been done and were executed pretty well.
Brandon Myers
>why the fuck Capcom didnt do something similar to that in the remakes? Either lower budget or it's the B team working on them. The remakes don't look as good as 7 either.
I felt cool as fuck just taking my time strolling through out the house with the glock in hand it made me feel like I was stalking the family even though they were after me. Probably my 2nd fav re or first
Games like Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 7 that are technically First Person Shooters but don't feel like FPS's are so awesome. It's a shame the blueprint for how a FPS game "should play" is so set in stone.
Christian Gray
Same, I heard the hard mode does change a lot of stuff and gives you limited saves but its still too scripted for me.
Cameron Cox
I agree with OP, however the game is still flawed in aspects and I hope they do improve on some of the iffy parts like the complete lack of enemy variety and overeliance on scripted sequences.
Liam Long
Jack looks really off here.
Jayden Scott
>tfw i'm one of those RE boomers that enjoyed 7 and being called out as zoomers for saying it but now slowly but surely gets vindicated as more people are playing the game
Nathan Gomez
why did they decided to go with a boring as fuck enemy type like the molded?
Robert King
I theorize it's a mix of not wanting something that was too "goofy" after the critical failure of 5 and 6 and low costs.
Noah Perez
>Instead of relying on fan-service and doing callbacks to old RE But it has those.
Jordan Martin
>Either lower budget or it's the B team working on them. The remakes don't look as good as 7 either.
RE7 is like the highest budget "low budget horror game" ever. There's so much attention to detail and shit like the soundtrack is fucking huge. It's just constantly throwing new shit at you.
It's a shame so many people mistook the First Person perspective for this game being some kind of "cheap production". They clearly put an insane amount of effort and money into it and really wanted to bring RE back, I even think Ethan's entire body is actually completely animated when moving, which is really rare for an First Person game.
Jaxson Gonzalez
The director of 7 also directed Revelations, he likes his goo and derelict ships.
The molded were okay. I'm glad they were at least animated well.
Aiden Hill
>why did they decided to go with a boring as fuck enemy type like the molded?
They wanted some kind of enemy that could instantly spawn/despawn without looking too silly I think. Coming out of the walls and such.
Noah Collins
It looks so good in 1440p 144FPS.
Ryder White
I havent played RE7 I will soon, looks very good from the teaser, RE2 2019 captures what RE is about, puzzles, exploration, inventory managment (on hardcore), killing zombies and other creatures, bosses, and the Tyrant is the best thing of the game, stalkers are not overused as some people think, actually the Tyrant is the best implemented of them all. >mfw I need to complete the puzzles of the RPD with that fucker following me.
Bentley Ward
When you think about it this kind of game doesn't even need a big budget because most people really don't appreciate it. I wonder how many people even replayed it or try to complete the game in less than 5 hours that are really part of the RE experience.
