Define Soul

What gives a game "soul?"

it's old and shitty

I know it when I see it
That pic? No soul whatsoever

The concept of Soul is something that resonates with your soul, hence the name.
If you don't "get it" you probably have no soul, mr NPC.

If you have to ask, you'll never know.

you cant define it, you need to experience it

it's a synonym for "comfy"

The art direction and music give the impression that they were coordinated by a small team with a singular vision. The more you examine a game the more you realize how much attention and care was put into it.

And what does "comfy" mean?

How can you be this much of a retard?
>I don't understand this term
>So it's the same as this other term I also don't understand

When something is made with passion instead of a corporate assembly line.

It doesn't really happen much anymore.

This except remove the shitty part.

passion

What's the most modern game with soul Yas Forums.

come on, prove to me that this soul shit is just your nostalgia goggles

Attention to detail. That's all there is to it.

Bloodborne's the first one that came to mind.

Soul = nostalgia
Soulless = new thing bad
>oh no the remake made this rock 1 shade lighter than the original, they ruined it #SOULLESS

>I don't understand this term, so you don't either

Is this how autists cope with not understanding basic concepts?

Soul is a synonym for profound, non-superficial. Something that was made not just for profit, something that successfully conveys what any good art should convey: an abstraction of real life to reflect on a certain part of what it means to be human.

Yes. That's why he said it was the same as comfy.

name of game?

youtu.be/2N1TJP1cxmo

Nope. Newer Pokémon games, for example, have a bunch of attention to detail, but they completely lack soul.

It's cool and all that Pheromosa is a cockroach who lives in a beautiful desert that was nuked and is covered in beautiful glass but them rushing the games out in the state they did is soulless as hell.

Fuckin this

Hollow knight comes to mind

Art direction that tries to make the most of the limited resources it's given.

The intent is not to emulate "retro" shit with pixel and antialias, but to get the right balance between texture details and good contrast in interactable items.

sun & moon had more soul than any of the games in the GBA/DS era, though

Attention to even small details. You know how you can play something that looks nice up front but everything is totally lifeless but then you play something else that attempts to make everything seem living and breathing? The latter is what "soul" would be.

What the fuck am I reading? If a game is rushed, it has no attention to detail. If it has attention to detail, it hasn't been rushed.

Demons Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne.

These.

Dusk

Rain World

Hollow Knight.

Just yesterday started playing the new Subnautica game. Pretty damn soulful but then again so is the original.

I would say Stardew Valley but you can tell the developer tries a bit too hard to pander to the social media audience. The game would have soul if he just listened to his heart instead of removing things like killing animals for meat.

When the creative vision of a team is so apparent that it raises the game far above it's flaws and/or limitations.

FFXIV

lack of cuckoldry elements

The more assets the devs have to create by hand gives the game this personal feel that people call "soul". Or at least I do.
Today devs can use so many shortcuts, like having a computer generate so many aspects of the visuals of a video game that a lot of the modern games start to feel like they were actually not made by a human.

That's not soul vs soulless, that's just N64 vs NDS because latter only has a tiny screen.

Minecraft and Skyrim unironically

A couple things I think contribute to soul
>having to work within limitations forces more ingenuity in workarounds from a developer
>the less people part of the creative process the more a single focused creative vision emerges
>the refusal of a creator to compromise the experience for mass appeal, a willingness to alienate players with non homogenous and imperfect design

Soulless. Too much detail, too much effort on looks rathen than atmosphere. It looks good but doesn't immerse you.

Looks like something Tumblr would draw. Needles to say, soulless trash.

Bottom is full of visual clutter.

I think I remember that if you don’t have fare to ride the taxis after you’ve gone on a ride the drivers battle you

I thought that was really cool even though it’s really hard not to have 600 pokedollars

Both are soulless. Morrowind is Soulful.

I thought Skyrim was so bad it was a meme so I never played it.

I think it has a lot to do with a game's characters and settings glorifying God's perfect natural creation vs. glorifying the authors self-imposed hamfisted man-made delusions and fantasies about how he thinks the world should be like. For example this guy brought up old Pokemon games vs. new Pokemon games; the older games capture the childlike spirit of adventure and mystery that we all as human beings can all relate to but the new games come off with more of a "preachy" feeling if you know what I mean. Coupled with all the handholding and cutscenes it feels much more like an artificial, synthetic, man-made experience.

Anything made before 9/11.

Based as fuck

Binary Domain

It's good as babby's first Open World RPG.

That's just sad.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Is that a real game? Impressive tile work if it is.

Any idea factory game has more soul than that shit.

Botw

probably radiant historia, and that's pretty old already, so, not really any I guess.

>It's more than just graphics
>It's more than just gameplay
>It's more than both the above
>It feels alive
>Something constantly happens
>Has little details that you don't immediately see, but when you do it simply adds to the feeling of being alive
>It's full of...many things
>The atmosphere resonates with you
Those are just some of the things.

the game is made passionately. you can tell the dev actually likes games and cares about the profit. it doesn't feel so monetized and cash grabby. a lot of the times the game invokes a feeling of nostalgia, even if the game itself is not old. it means different things to different people.

It's not something you can easily define but it's there and you know by experience. A video game is made by coding several elements that includes sound, visuals, effects, events and so on, but those mashed together don't automatically make a game or make it good by default. There has to be harmonizing human reason behind everything so it can correctly flow.

Like any job, there's a person who will simply do it and finish his shift and there's the one who will transform the chore into something else that might appear, at first, the same of what the first guy did but if you pay attention, you might notice it's not really the same. Games are just like that.

Some games denote this harmony we may call "soul", because the people that worked behind this title deposited their "soul" on it. It's difficult to point out, but there's always something special about them. Most of the time you have to compare it with a shitty remake to make people notice what you are talking about because games are unique in their own way.

Pretty much this

This artist needs to learn to make large open spaces with less detail so they dont burn out peoples eyeballs

Gravity Rush. Soul is a dumb meme that needs to die though.

meant product* not profit

He didn't remove it for social media points, he's a libtard and part of his vision is that stardew is a happy place where no bad things happen but he made a solid game

one of the highest quality dungeon crawlers ever made, and it oozes with creative passion

Forgot
>looks like a faggot

Nice, judging a game by character portraits.

Yes.
Soul is such a vague term to describe a game that looks visually like it was handcrafted by artists.

>modern games can't have so-

Which one

>Soul
Games I like
>Souless
Games I don't like

All the Witcher is soulless.

Soulless. It's simply not appealing.

>soul
Simple graphics
>souless

BTFOd by the post above you

>Soulless. It's simply not appealing.
What's your argument?

Based and Gtek pilled

PCs exist to be played, NPCs are immune to being controlled.

Wow, so this retort is highest display of wit the collective could come up with.
Consider this post upboated ;)

Design by committee appeal to everyone produces bland safe designs. The entire focus is to how to increase sales. This is soulless.

Passion projects where there is a real spark of creaitivy with a vision and you can tell the people poured their hearts out designing and loving this world. This is soul.

This character serves as an example of a sliding scale from Soullest to Soulless, left to right.

>Soul
Anything I like
>Souless
Anything I don't like

both seething

While it does work with nordic themes it still manages to keep them memorable and soulful. The OST is great and it has a "subtle" but noticeable artstyle.

Just accept it

2 is optimal
Don't @ me

Name one (1) example where OLD BAD NEW GOOD and I'll believe the soul meme
