What does Yas Forums think about Elite: Dangerous?

On sale right now on Steam but unsure about buying it or not. Looks great and I like the space theme but I also see a lot of bad reviews, even from people who have hundreds of hours.
Thoughts?

it becomes boring once you git gud

Many of them complaining about endless grind, something only people obsessed with "muh big ships" care about

there's nothing to do after the grind

Inperial Cutterchad reporting

but why is it grindy?

the rewards are very low,it's why the entire community except a few dads resort to exploits

pls don't get my hopes up, also they need way more ships or else this will just be collab for some other ship waifu game.

For me it's the federal corvette

>star citizen gacha game

>only did combat missions at first
>no money
>read up on exploration
>kid out a ship and just go wherever scan and map planets
>come back and sell the data for 80 mil
>but the biggest ship I can find
>either grind combat missions, go exploring again or trade
fun for the time I had with it but it has the same problem as No Mans Sky no deep content anywhere shallow af

I've owned this game for like 3 years, played it like 15 min and noped right out of it.

Embarassing

It's a great fucking game, but it doesnt have any story, so you will have to make your own goals.
You're playing on a galaxy that is 1:1 the size of our own, with lots of familiar views such as VY Canis Majoris (the biggest star on our galaxy), Sagitarius A, our own solar system...
There is lot to explore, hell if you're lucky you can even meet some alien races.
The stations are really well made, and ships are pretty good looking.

I did the exact same, sold data, transported cargo, ended up with tonnes of cash and nothing to do.

The forum is full of whinging old men who cry about every nitpicked detail at length while not even playing the game anymore. It's a pathetic sight.

Just watched a gameplay video and it's not looking great at all
>13 minutes to get to objective flying through space
>mark objective
>fly to next objective for another 13 minutes
Is at least VR mode enjoyable?

It has some of the best, most immersive flight controls I've experienced. I wanted to enjoy it, but I just couldn't find anything to do that kept me entertained.

All the current content is shallow af, honestly just pirate x4, and maybe buy that if you end up liking it.

>It's a great fucking game
It really could be. After all these years, I wish they had spent the time/money to add a expansive story on top of the really good space-sim foundation they built. Fuck, they could even contract another company to create all the narrative and just add in some set pieces.

If you decide to get it its best you think of it more as space trucker simluator 3300. Its not really combat sim or a trade sim or an exploration sim. The devs also feel horribly out of touch. Now if all you wanna do in it is fly around a bit in some neat ships and chill out looking at planets its pretty great. Otherwise stay away.

It's quite literally a game about space trucking. if you want more action focused space game you should play something else. It's like picking up Euro Truck Simulator and getting disappointed that you don't get to do high speed races like in Burnout.

I picked it over Star Shitizen when it was being crowd funded. I'd been wanting Elite 4 for a good decade before it was announced.

It is a steaming pile of horse shit, and no updates since the games initial release have addressed the fundamental flaws of the game.

I just want a game where I can pilot a ship but also get into fights outside. When are we getting GTA in space?

Needs player driven economy and player territories
There's no point in releasing a fuck huge carrier that cost billions if there's no conflict to use it in and profit from

I'm quite enjoying the Vision.

I mean if star citzen ever comes out lol youll be able to fight with rifles on the ground and shit. Youll even be able to board other players ships and try to capture it. I can get why people could dump 10s of thousands of bucks on the "game" if it actually came out and lived up to all its promises it would be the greatest game ever made. To bad we know life isnt like that.

Played it nonstop for two weeks doing mostly mining and trucking then realized there wasn't even a global chat or an instanced bandit station mission. It's shit with a nice coat of paint. It's 1/10th the experience of Eve online. It's a tech demo.

Maybe play EVE Online then.

Does this shit have capital ships?

It's my favorite game that I can't recommend.

This game's like getting your first car, in space.
My experience flying solo was fun, I flew the hour realtime it takes to get to hutton orbital and met someone who invited me to join their squadron, that really upped the replay value since doing things in a group made it easier to want to try shit I didn't care about on my own, like shooting aliens and mining.

There are AI captial ships and the largest player controlled ships are pretty big like the andaconda and cutter. They can be about the size of a small battlecruiser. Fleet carriers are coming out in like a month and are gonna be fuckin massive but they are more like moving stations then controllable ships. And are also gonna be basically worthless and a monument to Frontiers disconnection with the playerbase.

maybe make there something worth doing instead of having a skinnerbox

why the fuck did they get rid of the support ships for the fleet carriers?

not him but should I get x3 or x4?
People have told me that x3 is so much better, but x4 looks really great and it has space legs

>he doesnt fly a covenant ship

Attached: 20180906112726_1.jpg (1920x1080, 437.55K)

x3 albion prelude is a feature/content complete game in vanilla and has some great overhaul mods that are still updated.
x4 looks better but thats basically it.
Get x3 its cheaper and finished. Get x4 if you are a sucker for grafics and dont mind it being not as fleshed out as x3 at the moment.

I dunno its really perplexing. As it stands the only conceivable use is to set them up as a sort of trading station. It has no other real uses. Also it has fuckin upkeep. 5bil to buy the damn useless thing and you have to pay weekly upkeep. If your curious it will cost about 14bil in the first year of owning one.

the pvp is carebear, I was expecting a hardcore cuthroat galaxy when I made the mistake of comitting to their kickstarter. (The only kickstarter I ever donated to)

I fucking love X3 bros

My dream mod is

>All the fun of XRM/X-tended
>with the optimization and quality of life of Litcube

Truckin by the Grateful Dead plays plays in my head every time this game is mentioned.

147 billion

Because face it, they were dumb and useless. The update is called Fleet Carriers but instead you also get a smaller ship hanging around that only serves as a cosmetic token describing the main carrier setup.

They shouldve made three unique versions of the carrier according to the main career paths instead, but this is masters of asset starving we're talking about. Also, there should've been a small cheaper "carrier" for loners who don't need the huge space dong and would be content with 1L and couple of M pads.

Ya "carebear" piracy in these kind of games tend to arises when theres no real in game reason to be a pirate or fight. I used to play alot of uncharted waters online and I was a pirate. Issue was there really wasnt a whole lot to gain from being a pirate but you could potentially bankrupt traders if they werent being smart with their money. I actually kind of liked it that way puting a player in a situation where they pay you for their cargo back was fun. I even gave back alot of cargo for no reason. Felt kindda gentlemen theivy actually. One time I was being hunted by pirate hunters from Madagascar through Indonesia before they cornered me in the Persian gulf. God that game was fun.

I was hoping for a fleet carrier that would help me with exploring. Have it old a few ships with a bunch of supplies. Perhaps have it send out probes to map planets automatically for me so more then just the ultra valuable planets would actually be fuckin mapped. Perhaps god fuckin forbid a new feature related to exploration from the carrier. But no. No fun allowed here. Hell even in the FAQ when asked how an explorer could use the carrier to at least cover the cost of upkeep the only thing they could come up with was "set it up as a trading stop". Fuck these guys man. Like an explorer like me could even afford the damn thing.

It's Frontier, man. I was expecting them to fuck everything up and they delivered as usual.

Btw they actually used the 3d assets of those support ships on the carriers parked at shops. Notice how they have different mdels and paintjobs?

ARX content.

When the fuck is the Panther Clipper?

Could have been EVE with nice graphics and actually flying your ship. RIP

It's stuck in the mail slot.

Isnt that thing like 2x the size of type 9 or something? How would it even fit in the mail slot?

Wonder what kind of a ship is that?

I will never not be mad about wind resistance in space.
Freelancer had the perfect space controls, where you could try and be tricky to drop an enemy from tailing you but if your reactions were good enough you could glue to someones ass. Having the YAW be slowed because "the devs hate turreting" was so retarded I'll die angry at this.

How do you move your camera like that? Is it a mod?

Thanks, new to x3, still learning

Space legs any day now

I guess theres sight seeing?

Thanks everyone for the thread

Same boat. Been feeling rudderless lately. Might as well go to the far side of the Milky Way because FCs in their current form seem like a dud and Thargoid combat doesn't really appeal to me.

>Might as well go to the far side of the Milky Way
Classic. Ther's nothing the you haven't already saw. You'll drop this idea half way and strand you ship in the middle of nowhere for months only to return to mddle of nowhere when "new era" releases. Then you self destruct but was the point of going there then?

I have enough money (9.5bil) that the loss of exploration data means nothing. There are occasional things to see, biological and geological phenomenon, interesting configurations of planets, etc. Considering that only something like .008% of the galaxy has been discovered after more than 5 years of this game existing, there could always be something new out there. Spirit of the explorer and all that.

its fun in vr

>Thargoid combat doesn't really appeal to me
Fuckin this

I was pretty interested in it at the start and then found out its basically "do this with these and you win". That and the thargoid weapons are annoying, as in, you can deal with them but it just isnt fun, at least for me.

It's pretty great in VR but mediocre if you're not into space trucking and don't have VR.

But I'm into space trucking and VR. I guess I'll buy then because my expectations are so low after reading all of this that I cannot feel disappointed

This is a fair point, ED in VR is a must play. Athough at the time I had a Vive1 and the text was nigh unreadable

It's boring, even with friends.
You'll spend your time mining for the first dozen hours and you'll be disappointed once you get one of the big ships.
Most of it requires a ton of grind to even unlock if I remember correctly.
