VTubers irritate me a lot for some reason and I'm not sure why. I found them funny at first and watched a few videos, but now it grates on me. Not sure if it's because it's an anime character projected onto a real person, or how the highlights reels just involve them getting really loud and it's supposed to be funny, or how VTube fans treat them like actual anime characters. I don't care if they're posted on Yas Forums or anything, I just began to dislike them a lot and I'm not fully sure why

Following that logic vtubers aren't any different.

The difference is that an anime character is a product of a huge amount of people, the seiyuu does the lines but all the character comes from a team of writers to stand as one person. With VTubers it's one person doing an extended improv act, they are the character, so it's not surprising the VAs for each character are constantly talked about in these threads. It's just really reminiscent of why streamer culture sucks in the first place I think

Most anime characters come from a single shut-in manga/LN character user.
They just hit it big and eventually get an adaptation.
Anime original adaptations usually also have only one dedicated writer per studio.

It's still different. I don't hate streaming as a concept, but it does encourage cults of personality, and the idea of a VTuber has evolved to really center around this in the same way 90% of people who stream in the West are trying to be the next ninja. Maybe I am the weird one for not liking such a popular thing, but it just feels inauthentic and off.

I felt this way until I watched a decent amount of Korone, which doesn't focus on loud funny noises at all and feels more authentic than the others. Yeah she's putting on a cute voice and doing a mild character thing but fundamentally she's just playing games she likes and being an entertaining sperg about it.

I also enjoy some of Pekora's stuff, because she's so loud and so inauthentic that it becomes funny

See, for me this is the appeal. The characters are a fun mask they can wear that lets them be more open with themselves. Korone is cute and plays old vidya which is the draw, but there's the occasional moments where she opens up about herself, like how she's thankful for Okayu because she's afraid she annoys the people around her and that she can't others if they go too far with a joke like Okayu can. Suisei is especially interesting because she started out independent, and there's a couple of videos that talk about her life and the struggles she's gone through to get where she is now.

I'm definitely overthinking things, but I find shit like this fascinating.
