People always shit on the reflex sights, but does the SMG actually have irons? I couldn't really work out how you were supposed to aim the thing otherwise. There's those weird cutouts, but they seem to be offset from the bore axis and then you have to hold the thing diagonally which is weird.

nah. I shitpost in these threads to keep them alive but no one is biting. as an old fag I'd say the half life universe was a little more interesting in the late 90s/early 00s when stuff like the x-files and twin peaks were popular. Now people expect way too much from games, a gloried long distance e key (gravity gun) and super mysterious suit man are barely interesting. I was playing Sekiro the other day; the game is stealth spiderman naruto ninja with a proper story and drop dead beatiful settings. in alyx you pick up items and you put them down because physics... I'm a high school teacher and most of my students play apex, fortnite and lol. alyx would bore every single one of them to tears even if you gave them a VR set for free.

some of the voice actors from the originals arent just gone, they're literally dead

I don't hate VR, I wish it evolved into something more than a gimmick and honestly the only franchise I expect to mkae something out of it is Resident Evil.

i will admit that i'm probably a victim of some sort of bias when it comes to half life and waiting more than a decade for a new game, but the game itself is a vr game and what it does with vr works pretty damn well. the story is smaller in scope for the sake of vr and so are its fps philosophies.

this game would not work if it was just ported onto mouse and keyboard, so I think your argument of "once the vr novelty wears off its just dead" is invalid.

VR is not the next big thing, the movement problem can't be solved. VR will be a stepping stone like pagers until they develop Alternate reality or matrix style tech

short answer, yes. longer answer, i think valve would be guilty of alyx being a "shove down people's throat" game if the game was actually half life 3. i'd definitely be more upset, but valve themselves know that they needed a side story that would work with vr. the vr audience makes up 1.3% of the steam playership, so valve knew going in that it wouldn't be a top seller so the purpose of the game is to sell vr and it does a pretty good job at that.

alyx and REVR are similar in a lot of ways, half life in unique in the way it tries tells the half life story.

Alyx feels like an old friend from high school you haven't seen in 15 years and you are so fucking excited to meet him again and see how the changed. he was the cool kid with a leather jacket and band t-shirts was all about his bike. and then you finally meet him. and it's literally the same guy, with the same jacket just a different bike.

Duh, nearly all the criticism is preceded or followed by an admission that the person didn't actually play the game and just ruined it for themselves by watching a playthrough.

i think alyx worked because of the more controlled combat spliced in between what amounts to a horror game. but it's my first vr game so who knows.

what felt off the most to me was the combine dialogue. like, them talking or showing any personality at all. i reasoned with it in my head that it was years before a strongly indoctronation effort in part of the combine after alyx and going into hl2. otherwise, the dialogue felt pretty grounded and enjoyable.
