No, you don't have to play the old ones first, the game is a soft reboot where the events of the old one are all mythic tales from the ancient past the demons tell each other to keep each other up at night about the boogeyman Doomguy.

It doesn't matter. They're very different and really only connected in name and spirit. The old ones are good fun and hold up if you use a decent sourceport, but there's zero reason to play them before the new ones.

The very first game is definitely worth playing (second one adds a lot of the iconic monsters but has really bad level design), but not really necessary to enjoy the nu-DOOM's.

Get original Doom and Doom II. Play them with Chocolate Doom. If you enjoyed it a lot then also get Master Levels, norfl, Final Doom. SIGIL and Doom 64. If you didn't, just skip to Doom 2016.

I played the first one like a year ago. It's actually very easy to get into because the mechanics are all simple and straightforward. The levels are really well designed in terms of layout, enemy placement, secret hunting, overall pacing and it has some neat tunes as well. The game holds up wonderfully even after all this time, I loved my entire playthrough of it, so yeah, there is no reason not to play it first.

Doom 2 is not quite as good, the maps are kinda gimmicky and a lot of encounters are just based on suddenly throwing a shitload of enemies at you at once, it feels kinda repetitive like this and when I was only halfway through it I just wanted to be done with it. There are still some good maps in the second half but just overall the game has more bumps and pitfalls whereas the first game is a smooth enjoyable ride from start to finish. I think you should still play it though and see for yourself how you like it. This is just my opinion, there are others who think Doom 2 is better than 1. If anything you should play the games because the nu-Dooms throw a lot of references and fanservice to the classic games and that's not really enjoyable if you haven't even played them.

Yes, Classic Doom(and 2) are still enjoyable to this day and there's nothing wrong with the Classic Doom games or the latest Doom games. The only flaw I can think of in Classic Doom is the backtracking. Other than that it's overall a good shooter just make sure you use Gzdoom, which adds features not present in the original release or rereleases. Gzdoom also has a ton of mods if you want to add modern fps gameplay mechanics if you find the combat outdated. Doom'16 is a solid shooter but Eternal is better in every way.

Doom 2016 is pretty good. Doom Eternal is mediocre. Play Doom 1 and 2, absolute classics. Be warned that D2 has bullshit infuriating level design but more interesting enemies and weapons.

Yes, don't listen do these trolls. The classic games are definitely the superior ones, with a very strong scene and new maps being released everyday (it was active over 25 years)! Old doom have generally better level design. Combat is a bit dull in Doom 1, but from Doom 2 onwards it's fantastic.

Glory-killing for i-frames is a gameplay mechanic, and one that'll get you killed if you fuck up the timing.

Wrong. Nostalgia doesn't have anything to do with Classic Doom popularity. Everyday we have a lot of newcomers, people who never played Doom on their childhood... but that always happens because the games are fucking good. The Doom 2 balance in special is just very well made and the level design principle (non-linearity and interconnectivity) is far ahead from Nu-Doom (Not that I deslike these games though. They are very good, but definitely not better than the classics). That's why you can find infinite new maps to play, from 1993 to 2020, the majority of them made for the base game.

No one really has "nostalgia" for video games. That's just a reddit meme.

Doom still holds up and is fucking awesome, Doom 2 has some very shit levels and is more of a slog to play through, Doom 64 is great.

I tried to play D2016 a couple years ago. Got very bored after just a couple maps. Later heard that it's nothing like the originals, so I gave Ultimate Doom a shot, and played it through in a couple sittings. Literal fucking masterpiece.
Currently playing through Doom 64 with 64EX, and it is spoopy and awesome.
