The writing in New Vegas is garbage. It is filled with unnecessary exposition, terrible "humor," and enormous plot holes. Ten years ago bitter nerds convinced everyone that wordiness was the same as good writing and the meme has stuck due to groupthink. Examine the game objectively and you will find it doesn't live up to the hype.

let me summarize Fallout NV's plot for you

You play a courier delivering a random package to the New Vegas strip and you get ambushed and shot in the head, but somehow survive, and in about 2 days spent in a dirty bed in the home of an amateur doctor you are already fit and able to set out on an adventure to track down the person who shot you for some reason even though you have no equipment or motivation to do so. So you leave immediately and trek across a dangerous wasteland after the man who shot you just to find this package and eventually find yourself at the gates of New Vegas where it's revealed that your employer is a super rich powerful overlord, who despite having access to near limitless wealth and power, decided to contract some shitty little courier service to deliver the most important piece of technology in New Vegas instead of hiring a group of skilled mercenaries or something.

Why you are obligate to do any of this is unknown but dude trust me, you WANT to get revenge don't you? So then after you get revenge you are embroiled in an armed conflict over hoover dam, a massive hydroelectric damn that somehow still works after 200 years of sitting idle, and also is still somehow connected to the power grid, despite 200 years of not being maintained, and provides clean water and electricity to the next state over somehow.

Whatever you decide, you can take solace in the fact that no matter what happens, your chosen faction literally cannot lose even if you fuck off mid battle or start killing your own soldiers. Eventually you confront the commanders of the opposing armies and kill them, or use magic words to convince them that their plan sucks, whereupon they will immediately turn tail and run away like little girls, even if one of them is a 7 foot tall murderous maniac who kills people for fun and can run at 30 miles an hour in full plate armor,and could have probably killed every single NCR soldier at the dam himself if he left his tent.
