Because the artist incorporated aspects of the character's original design and translated it into its equivalent of black hairstyles, like Cloud's spikes. Most people would just make the same character but black.

Cloud's problem is that he's too grounded, or realistic or however you want to put it. Translating his spiky anime hair into dreads is a smart move based on just translating him into a black character, but overall he doesn't really look anime or stylised enough to fit in with FF7. I think he's on the right track though.

These ones were meant to translate the original character into something that remains relatively faithful to the original while being black. Or they're by Tumblr types who have horrific design sense and are doing it for diversity points. Samus redesigns fail in particular because they're all built around attempting to take superficial design aspects of Samus (blonde, tall, wears a blue suit and orange power armour) and translate that into their mental image of Samus which is a grizzled tough-guy bounty hunter which means no femininity, lots of scars, super buff, and so on. It's the strength and weakness of Samus as a blank slate, which is that a lot of people get mad if they don't line up with how they feel the character should look.
