Xbox was built on XBL at one point being much better than the alternative despite being a paid for service but also because of franchises like Gears and Halo at one point being good enough to carry Xbox into relevancy. These series have now been shit for a long time. They need to just make Xbox online free. Otherwise what the fuck is the point when you get more a less the same experience on Playstation?

Xbox is an ecosystem now, not solely a console. All 1st-party Xbox games are also being released on Windows at launch.
Not to mention Microsoft owns both Xbox and Windows.
Xbox market = console players + PC players
Playstation market = console players

Xbox 360 was a great console such that the 360 dominated america/uk and didn't do so bad elsewhere ending up in a tie against the PS3, but then Xbox One was crap and lost all that gained market share worldwide.
When you got two consoles that have basically the same games Sony will win by being the 'default' console for everyone outside the US.

Because it has no good games, at least not in current gen. They banked on Quantum Break, Crackdown 3, nuHalo, and a few other duds to get them through and literally none of them did. Meanwhile you had Playstation coming into current gen with a full blown arsenal after a few months. However, in last gen, everyone definitely preferred Xbox over Playstation because of the social aspects it offered AND better exclusives. Both consoles don't really seem to have a solid lineup for next gen so we'll see what happens, but currently Xbox has the better (not really improved or changed tho) controller and PS5's looks like shit (might feel different). Playstation also has worse specs on paper, which is something to note.
