Borderlands 2 dialogue was the peak of cringe in the series, next to Pre Sequel. The 1st game and 3 have all the memes in sidequesting quarantine. 3 has the best pacing for leveling along with significantly better drop rates and builds.The appeal is all about looting diablo style. Unfortunately it took the newest game for Gearbox to realize players wanted a vault with more than 5 spaces.

The story in the Borderlands series has notoriously been absolute shit. Borderlands 1 is said to have the best story and atmosphere, and that's because it literally has no story so it can't be compared to the awful trash of the other games. It does have decent lore, though.
Personally I don't give a shit about the story. I've always loved the Borderlands series for the shoot and loot gameplay, and the interesting builds you can make with the characters. I can't remember a time where I've had as much fun zipping around with a melee Zer0 build. There's just nothing like going invisible, backstabbing an enemy to death, only to immediately go invisible and kill another guy. Then the cycle completes. It's absolute bliss when you pull it off.
If you don't enjoy the gameplay loop of Borderlands 2, you're almost certainly not going to enjoy the other games.

Borderlands 2 is considered the best (I haven't played it yet), but 3 is awful (good gameplay wise) I just beat it. I played 1 and the Pre-sequel which I liked but if you didn't like 2 you probably won't like those. The appeal for me is the loot system, there is no better feeling in game than finding some OP as fuck weapon from a drop.

I found Pre-Sequel far less cringy than Borderlands 2, but your mileage may vary.
The original game is really good, if you can do without some of the creature comforts of 2. You can also play its DLC and watch the cringe trickle in in real time.
