>What went so fucking right?
They had the talent back then.
>And why has nobody (including Square) been able to replicate it?
Monolith Soft is currently the best JRPG dev.

>>FF6 on PS
wat

Monolith Soft made one great game, one disappointing sequel, another disappointing sequel and so they just went back to remaking their one good game again.

Atlus > shitare

SNES cart went for outrageous prices, even back then. Most people I know who played it did so on the PS or emulator.

Talent, and it was right at the point when budgets were getting big but actual development hadn't become bloated by useless garbage.
Also, the core staff was just reaching their prime and weren't entirely senile geriatrics who should've retired at least a decade ago but didn't because of Japanese seniority culture.

Devs were still motivated and were allowed to pour their hearts and souls into their project. Technical limitations only fueled creativity, everything was hand-crafted.

every single FF game up to 9 is on PS1, kiddo.

FFVII was the first Final Fantasy that Europe got and when it sold gangbusters Squeenix quickly ported everything except III. Origins has I and II and the PAL version of anthology has IV and V.

>XCX
>disappointing
get filtered, faggot

fucking CASHIES

Squaresoft and Enix were better off as separate companies, the competition kept them on their toes.

FF6 doesn't belong in this picture

you were the right age

What talent? Sakaguchi hasn't made a single good game since leaving.

FF8 was shit tho

I don't think any FF can be properly enjoyed if you know anything about them beforehand. Like 100% of the charm is how fucking crazy and unexpected they are.

I bought in 2002 I think. In Europe that was the first official release.

Not FF III
and FF6 on the PSX isn't the best version because of loading times when you start a battle and shit

Unironically soul. A bunch of right people together at the right time and with enough technological advancements/limitations to create ludo.

>And why has nobody (including Square) been able to replicate it?
Because square doesn’t exist any more. Much less notorious than activision blizzard, but the Enix merger low key ruined square soft as well. Their first game after the merger was literally x-2

Is this the current Final Fantasy thread? I would like to ask for some advice on FF6. Which version should I play? The only options I am choosing between are Anthology or "III" for SNES. I have decided strictly against GBA or Mobile. I hear PSX has bad loading times, but it adds a run button I think. Does the run button make it faster despite the loading? Which one is shorter to complete? Also does Anthology have any other changes I should know of?

Not that user, but whatever you tell yourself. You can't deny the production values of his games past Squaresoft were above anything SE has produced in the recent decade. I'm not even a Xbox fan and I can admit his 360 games look far more appealing.

Sakaguchi knew how to tell a good adventure story and Uematsu laid a great soundtrack over it every time. Gameplay was barebones but that was all it took.

Now we have anime tropes, convoluted nonsense, overly ambitious development timelines and poorly executed gameplay systems. I don't think SE have released a banger from their in-house studios since TWEWY in 2007.

This is where they peaked

They had talenty. They left a long time ago. The budget is too bloated and thus have to cater to the mass audience like never before seen.

It's the price to pay for graphics. Take the pill and join the Ys'gang

Last Story was great, Lost Odyssey was good enough

Not 3

>What went so fucking right?
Your nostalgia.

The PAL boxart is so good.

I wish FF3 had gotten an Origins style remake. The DS one was garbage and the NES one is still the best version. They got real bad at remakes after the PS1 clearly since Origins is still the best version of FF1 by a long shot.

>Monolith "we can't make sequels so we keep rebooting Xeno shit" Soft is one of the worst JRPG devs in history

I don't even know what the US covers look like. Do I want to?

FF6 for PS1 had annoying load times that the PS1 version didn’t have. It also took like 10 seconds or more to save versus instantly. The CG intro was cool though. I can’t remember if the sound effects were low quality samples, I know FF4 was. They might have changed them to native PS1 midi too I don’t remember but they might sound off. PS1 midi was a Sony sound chip developed from the SNES one so they sound similar anyways. Music was streamed though.

FF8 was an awful and boring game. You had to draw your spells, the most useful spells were summons that had several minute unskippable animations, and the story was shit with shit asshole protag.

FF9 tried to be like FF1/3/4 and it was interesting to start then became a chore and got boring.

FF7 was great though, odd character designs and goofiness aside

Origins was so good, it's a surprise they even fucking bothered to keep remaking 1 after that.

I remember finding the PS1 loading times frustrating for what it's worth.

SNES, no question.

SNES > GBA >>> Anthology > Mobile/Steam.

is there any FF that actually has engaging combat and gets decently challenging?
I havent played the very old ones.
>inb4 ff12 or ff10 fags thinking gambits and jobs are actually interesting
to be honest with you senpai I think even dq11 has more strategy and knowledge required with the draconians settings even if its a bit too grindy at times

To add to this, we're not talking about "2-3 seconds to load a map".

We're talking "4-5 seconds to open or close the menu".

>when nintendo fucked europeans hard with no FF and most Square jrps(like CT)
>Square only got recogniton thanks to FF7 here
If it wasnt for Sony... fucking Nintendo, jesus christ, it pisses me off how I couldnt play SNES FF and CT back then and know what I missed years later.

>Sakaguchi knew how to tell a good adventure story and Uematsu laid a great soundtrack over it every time.
It'll always make me sad that we'll likely never see a FF with these two involved ever again.

>is there any FF that actually has engaging combat and gets decently challenging?
unironically FFXIII's end-game missions. you need to plan and strategize your party and paradigm deck and then execute it flawlessly in 5 minute gruelling missions where if you make the slightest mistake you're fucked and you're not getting a 5 star rating.

>doesn't like job system
I was going to recommend some but you're beyond saving.

If you want challenging, give IVDS a try. It's like a totally new game. Status effects actually work and it has those cool augments.

I am greatly appreciating the advice. If the load times make it that much slower than walking everywhere, then I will stick with the SNES version. Thank you.

No.

Also there's a relic you can equip that doubles your walk speed.

Y'know I would like to discuss all of the FF games some day, and how your view of them has changed over the decades. I've def. changed my opinion regarding almost every game as I got older and also just expanded my vidya horizons in general.

US covers is basically just the CG art.

Europe also didn't get Dragon Quest until VIII if I recall. Europe was in a sad state for RPGs. Actually, didn't they also not get Mario RPG and Earthbound?

They really should've marketed it better. It's so unpexpected to find out what the game's really like.

Attached: Scandia.png (1024x896, 1.16M)

No

Oh, that's good to know. Thank you.

not really, none of the FF games are really that hard

Tactics

>Actually, didn't they also not get Mario RPG and Earthbound?
That's right.
We got jack shit for RPGs back in the day.

FF7 was shit nostalgiatard

The first one is a fucking nightmare. Have fun with the spider cave. And the ice cave. Especially the ice cave.

Six was awesome, seven was ok, eight was garbage, nine is my favorite. I wouldn't say everything went right but even Eight has its merits compared to things that Nomura keeps getting his grubby dick all over.

Personally I fucking loved Bravely Default, but the sequel was a letdown so they didn't hit a streak.
