How far through the original game does Aerith die? Would it have been the climax of Part 2?

The time ghosts are probably the 1997 versions of the party and important characters, what with the sword/gun thing. Nomura probably expected they would show up again down the line, speak in their original voices, and our minds would be blown and we'd all appreciate his genius. That probably isn't going to happen with all the backlash, but that's where I'm guessing this was going.

I actually was looking forward to seeing how they remake her death scene, the original fmv is obviously pretty dated and I wanted to see how well they executed the story with modern visuals. Original ff7 is a good story, but with a better sense of direction and more resources available it could have translated into a great story if executed properly.

But I guess the team is more interested in telling a worse story, and Aerith will either die in a way that feels less impactful or she'll not die at all

Midgard is the tutorial, you don't spend more than 3 hours there. Disc 1 goes up to Aerith's death then Disc 2 goes all the way to the return to Midgard and the showdown with Hojo. Disc 3 is only the final dungeon.
