Can we all agree the ending of Celceta was peak Adol?
>you want to tell me where the western and eastern continents are so I can be the one to discover them? no way fag, I will find them on my own
>such a chad that the word adventurer gets created after him
Anyone know if flash guarding then spamming your highest dps ability is as effective in 9 as it was in 8/Celceta?
It gets shit on a lot for other reasons but what you said fits him to a tee.

Where should I start if I want to play the series?
anywhere, really. If you want to experience the very best right away, play Oath or Origin.

Dawn of Ys

It's been a while, I honestly can't say.
I binged on the games for the first time back in 2016 or so, stopped when I got halfway thru 6 and have yet to pick it back up.
good
dawn of ys has the sexiest soundtrack
>Finished 8 recently and loved it
>Decide to give Celceta a shot
>Only a few hours in and im not enjoying it that much
When does the game pick up?
I just finished Selray Village and went to Karnas village
and the sexiest everything else
drop it and play dawn of ys instead, it's the same story but a vastly better game
So how the fuck do I get into this series? It looks comfy as hell.
the stories in the games are all self-contained, start from the one that interests you the most, or use common sense and play in release order.
Nah
It's a great game in its own right but it's so different from Celceta that it can't be compared, definitely does not have the same story, and Celceta's issues are overblown to the point of ridiculousness

Mantis thing in Origin.
I never actually hear anyone list the actual flaws Celceta is supposed to have, so I can't join in on the hivemind for hating it. It's a solid game with perfect playtime.
nice. any bad ports or superior versions to look out for?
Way ahead of you.
Celceta is fucking great, maybe the most underrated Ys game
I don't subscribe to typical accepted Yas Forums opinions so I prefer Celceta over Dawn, not by much, but I did have more fun playing it
Its biggest issues are the latter 3 party members being really boring personality-wise, Leeza being arguably the worst "heroine" in the series, and Flash Move/Guard being way easier to pull off than Seven or VIII
It's unfortunate that it had to come right after Seven which had the best artstyle in the series, making Celceta's pretty average design seem much worse in comparison
Here's the series in chronological order along with the best version of all of them.
>Ys Origin
PC, PS4 and Xbone are all about equal
>Ys I & II
Ys I & II Chronicles for PC
>Ys IV
The Dawn of Ys, which you can emulate with Mednafen
>Ys III
The Oath in Felghana for PC
>Ys V
SNES
>Ys VIII
PC and PS4 are about equal
>Ys VI
PC is the only good version
>Ys Seven
PC
the original version of ys 3, which is 2D, is pretty damn shit, Oath is a remake of that game. All of the versions of Ys 4 are pretty solid, including Celceta. 5 is pretty tame and barely feels like an Ys game
Epona's tummy...
I actually like all the party members, and Leeza was pretty lame in all versions of Ys 4, but yeah, making Adol look like a faggot after Seven was Falcoms biggest mistake
My hot take is that I much prefer the fixed camera angles of Seven and Celceta over the full 3D camera control of VIII. I feel like they do some really interesting setpiece designs with the slow camera pans and also Ys combat is better when the player mechanics are simpler, which juggling camera controls puts a damper on
the only good thing I can say about VIII is that it looks pretty good, and the full camera movement does emphasize it despite being another downgrade for the extremely focused gameplay the series was known for.

Oh right, I forgot about the actual worst thing Celceta did, it cut the best fucking songs for no reason at all
youtube.com
now that is a valid fucking complaint, it is bizarre how many good tracks they left out, and theme of Adol was reduced to a barely recognizable menu jingle
>Ys1
>Iceridge of Noltia
>every sondtrack of the Ys games
>Dogi or Sister Nell
>Adol's very first basic look doesn't scream shonen so that
>Dark Fact
With Ys the stories aren't as spanning as something like the Trails series, so you can just drop in whenever and not miss too much beyond a few lore details. Though Ys has some DEEPEST lore too, it's light on that as well.
Though there are certain routes in which to play the games which might enhance your enjoyment:
GAMEPLAYFAG ROUTE:
>I+II Chronicles -> Dawn of Ys -> VI -> Oath -> Origin -> Seven -> Celceta -> VIII -> (IX)
The gameplay of the Ys games can be categorized as the 'bump games', 'platformer games' and 'party system games'. In I+II/Dawn you dryhump everything to death, VI/Oath/Origin overhauls the whole thing by adding jumping and three unique elemental abilities, and games post-Seven switch things up again by having you control a party of three characters at once you can freely switch between on top of adding other mechanics like Flash Guard (think Royal Guard from DMC) and so on.
Usually the games in each category improve with each iteration, so you might want to go for release order as it may be f.e. harder to go back to VI after tasting the exquisiteness of Origin, and so let you appreciate the changes in each new game.
LOREFAG ROUTE
>Origin -> I+II Chronicles -> Celceta -> Oath -> V Expert -> VIII -> VI -> Seven -> (IX)
If you really want to. Note that Dawn of Ys/Mask of the Sun aren't canon, instead Celceta is the canon Ys IV.
JUST GIVE ME THE BEST THE SERIES HAS TO OFFER ROUTE:
Dawn of Ys -> Oath -> Origin -> VIII -> (IX)
Technically you can play these in any order you like. If you like a respective gameplay style enough, then you can go check out the others in its style too.
BRAGGING RIGHTS ROUTE:
> I+II (PC-88) -> III (PC-88/98/X68000) -> Dawn of Ys -> Mask of the Sun -> V Expert -> MotS (PS2) -> the usual
Why?
NOTES:
>IX hasn't been localized yet, so to play it now you have to LEARN JAPANESE
>For best port versions, see:
>The VIII PC port used to be shit, but Durante fixed it
>Nobody cares about V
>Iceridge of Noltia

To be fair, it's not like they replaced them with nothing. The new tracks they added to the game were all fucking stellar

For the moon rune anons, is Ys IX good or did we go the same route as Trails with Cold Steel?
they are, but they still feel like downgrades for the most part. Bronze District from Dawn of Ys is one of the best tracks in the series.

hard to choose. Chester probably.
What do you mean by "the same route as Trails with Cold Steel" exactly?
I liked Ys IX much more than VIII although they're quite similar to each other.
I kinda accepted that party members are here to stay.
But is the combat in VIII and IX still more of the same? That's my real gripe with Seven and Celceta, all the moves feel like shit. Awful progression that only makes numbers go up with flashier effects and animations, but not really fun to use.
>are VIII and IX still more of the same
Yes, every fight plays out exactly the same because of flash guard and dodge.
>Yes, every fight plays out exactly the same because of flash guard and dodge.
ultimately this is the inevitable fate of the flash systems no matter how they try to sugarcoat it with other flavors.
I'm incredibly miffed on how they reduced the incredible Dawn of Ys intro to something like it sounds like it was arranged for the SNES
Compare this:

that's really what it boils down to, Seven and Celceta were cute little distractions from the real Ys action but it got really tiring in Ys 8
I didn't even know Flash Guard was a thing in Seven until I got to the final boss, and I think it improved the experience by a lot knowing that it didn't exist
yeah, they literally do not even tell you about it anywhere in the game
I finished the game on nightmare without knowing it existed. Only later I found out that was the way to avoid some of those otherwise unavoidable bullshit attacks.
And Napishtim through Origin were cute little distractions from the REAL Ys action
perhaps video games were never good
