Sony always relied on being a big corporation to pressure journalists, normies, and game developers into supporting their brand over Nintendo's. They have never ACTUALLY invested serious time and effort into making truly great video games the way Nintendo has.
The plan was to choke Nintendo out with their sheer size, but people are growing disenchanted with their bullshit and are flocking back to the big N.

I can't argue and say why exactly Japan seems to have done a 180ยบ over the PS4. In a way, it almost seems like the perfect console for the ultimate gaming, bar Microsoft. Why it's getting its flak?
A lot of it may be the well known stigma of a lot of PS4 games just overall being not very creative, inclining towards a Hollywood production and always AAA tier or movie inspired. Not to mention that since the Switchs' release, temptation to develop for that console seems to be rising and I feel that's what most Jap. devs seem to be doing, excluding the much bigger devs which might have exclusivity with Sony. Mobile/portable gaming is also a very big thing in there and Japan probably just prefers a console on the go rather than having it always on their living room.

devs are shocked because they want to optimize games for PS5, but sony screwed up their console and that shit overheats each time. we're talking about 360 red ring of death sort of failure here if they actually ship it out like this. "PS5 reveal in months" actually means they're fucking scrambling around and trying to figure out what to do -- whether they should upgrade the parts, but that's way too costly to sell at a loss along with the hardware they already have and software sales can't make up for that like it did these past two gens, or whether they should just ship it as is and maybe include an optional cooler

Japan ditched PS4 because of their censorship. Not just because of their artistic freedom, but because they were not outlining anything and declining games that would end up with massive delays that cost the companies thousands.
