If it was sonic teams level design with team rose's length on the later levels. Then it'd be kino. But it's a chore to go back and play team shadow and the last couple of sonic levels.

You have to point the analog stick in the general direction of where you want to homing attack, you can't just spam A. But more importantly, you have to wait a second for the next ghost to fully appear, otherwise the game won't register them as something you can lock on to. Probably would have been more clear if they had a safer part beforehand where you had to homing attack ghosts, since before that section you never have to.

This game is really hard to describe. Very love/hate relationship.
The last 3 levels of the game are high tier, but literally everything before that is mehhhhhhh and boring. Bosses are... ok.

Sonic Heroes is, for the most part, ratively boring and overly repetative. There are a few stages where the level design, pacing, and game mechanics all click in harmony, but the overwhelming mahority are nothibg to write home about.
The Casino and Desert levels are straight up awful. The forest and Green Hill zones are meh at best. Yes the game has some great music, but that doesn't completely save it.

SA1 and 2 are still pretty meh at best.
SA1 is admittedly very ambitious but it has aged like powdered milk.
SA2 is more streamlined and thus easier to get through this day and age but also less remarkable because it tries half as hard.

Because SA1 and SA2 are literal masterpieces. They are some of the best video games ever made, and they deserve to be recognized as such.
Heroes was average, boring, and (for the first time ever in the mainline) safe. Say what you will about the Adventure games, but at least they were ambitious, and you can tell the dev team gave it their all.

It's okay as everyone but Chaotix and then it becomes hell

I replayed it recently, and I feel the same way. Honestly I hated it more as a kid, but it's not really that hard, just tedious (I do think the hate for Chaotix is overblown, but then again I never had to warp back to the start of the level so maybe I got lucky).
Sonic > Chaotix > Dark > Rose

This is one of the only games I've ever played where the aesthetics and sound design carried it entirely.
I sincerely think the game play is TERRIBLE, some of the worst in the series, but just to look at and hear this game is so fucking fun that I beat three of the four campaigns.
I couldn't tolerate all the tutorials on Team Rose unfortunately.

That was innevitable without SA2. The bigger issue with SA2 is that it's the sonic games too many normies are nostalgic for because of the gamecube port.

It feels kind of weird because even though I had so many more hours poured into the genesis titles and those were the ones I played first I have so much more nostalgia for sa2 and honestly I like sa2 much more than the genesis games but i do still love the classics
