the RF4 wiki is so shit and i dont remember how monster raising works precisely but from what I remember there are the equivalent of EVs for training monsters so watch out.
Food/items from what I remember are basically an "unlimited" buff you can keep doing daily so there's no harm. I still think the elemental fairies are better because of how often some of them spam their spells
