Not him, but Cloud was completely unneeded. People expected ballot picks, and while Cloud had some backup the actual inclusion was done simply for Sakurai's sake, not because people wanted it.
And that doesn't even count the floodgates opening that day, causing speculation to be forever overridden with guest speculation to a point where it dwindles in-house series representation. Cloud was a bad choice, through and through.

It would have been way cooler if they waited to announce Snake until after Sonic. After they announced third parties there was absolutely no way Sonic wasn't going to be in. Remember, they announced Mario and Sonic at the Gay-Ass Olympics before announcing him in Smash.
