xbox 360 had the peak controller design

nobody cares about your quircky useless controller pcbro

I was and am really impressed with the Steam controller once I bought one (And in fact wish I bought a few now) but it's still not as good as a 360 pad for regular console shit. It works like an absolute dream for PC games but that's basically it.

Steam Controller 2 when?

>no gyro
>not capable of being remotely competitive against KB+M players
This shit is important when the skill ceiling is going up due to crossplay becoming more and more prevalent

the Steam Controller is the ultimate pleb filter

Sadly, probably never.

>tfw no dual-grips from the leaked SC2 prototype
>tfw no d-pad buttons from the alpha prototype because journalists couldn’t figure out how to play without a left analogue stick
>tfw no six-axis simultaneous gyro

I will say, I’ve grown a bit accustomed to the L-stick as an alternative to the d-pad in a couple of games where it can be macro’d to call up a radial menu by itself, but by and large it’s clunkier than the 4-button version would have been.

Love my Steam controller. The haptic feedback is awesome, and just the fact that its fully customizable and you can use other's presets for specific games (or create your own) is icing on the cake. Pairs well with Steam Link too which I use a lot. My only issue with it is the lack of a proper dpad, so shit like fighting games or 2d platformers dont play as well on this, but for everything else its a solid controller. Definitely the best bluetooth controller you can get atm.

100% without a doubt

There's a bunch of people on the hardware team that love the Steam Controller with a passion and genuinely believe in it as a universal input method. Clearly we don't give a shit about how many millions something makes (Half-Life Alyx) we just like to do cool shit

If the steam controller is so good why did it get discontinued months ago?

because they're working on the Steam Controller 2

because retards can't adapt to a new control scheme unless uncle ninty forces it on them

Here's to hoping that the DS5 has backpedals.

>no gyro
Good.

Because everyone who wants controllers owns a controller and it wasn't financially logical to buy it at the price it was being sold unless you were just interested in trying something different.
I ended up buying 2 when they were selling them for $5 and I love almost everything about it aside from it's god awful vibration.

>optional feature that competitive players use to be even more competitive with KBM players in first person shooters (especially arena shooters like Quake)
>a bad thing
pick one dumb faggot

>t. Valvebro

Fucking drag Robin back into the TF2 development room and fix the fucking lagbot/hacker issues you lazy fucks.

>optional feature
No. If it's there, games force it on players far too often.

Shit I hope there's a version 2. I only just heard about this, wish I'd bought a spare.

The software is fiddly as hell but it's a good controller for FPS once the gyro is set up correctly.

Left Touch Pad should replace D-Pad as a industry Standard.

I guess that's why they sold whatever stock they had left for $5

I like it, but the ABXY buttons are small and kind of annoying to reach. They're not outright unreachable, but your thumb doesn't sit on them the way it should.
I really like how the handles bend forwards rather than backwards.

The Dualshock 4, which is ostensibly the most used controller of this generation since it's bundled with the most sold console of the generation, has a gyroscope and games that could use it don't. Stop being wrong and a fag.

He's too busy for that. He's the new face of Valve Software.

The software is going to be made standalone accompanying the release of the second version.

Even though I would like a new version, this shit ain't happening.

>competitive with KB+M players in arena shooters on PC
Have sex incel.

I like the controller and the touchpad but I disagree. Any time I've tried to play a 2D sidescroller like Metroid or whatever with it, I end up having to change over to another controller.

valve time

>can't buy them
No shit it goes unnoticed, you retarded Valve cock sucker.

>and games that could use it don't.
And quite a few that are ruined by its inclusion. I'd rather get rid of motion controls entirely, especially as VR gets more popular and a retarded hybrid system becomes less needed.

>he missed the 5 dollar clearance sale
kek

You had five years. You snooze you lose

>Even though I would like a new version, this shit ain't happening.

Valve need to think of a way to add a second stick and/or d-pad to pacify the retards

DESU they could lose the left haptic pad... I only use it for weapon wheels or miscellaneous functions.

i bought it when it was on sale for like 5 bucks. its kinda cool

>And quite a few that are ruined by its inclusion.
Don't snap your wrists listing off all of the examples.
Nintendo has been pushing gyro aiming the most and they keep it optional. It's not an issue if it's kept as an option so that retrograde autists like you who won't admit it's better than just sticks can hole up in their comfort burrow.

>side scroller
>2020

>Doesn't even have mandatory LED lighting to ruin any immersion in darkened rooms
That's like 3 out of 10 zoomzooms.

I did attempt to purchase it during the sale and they were out of stock.
Fucking nigger.

I fucking love this controller. Its such a fun little tinkering hobby to tweak the controls to get them just perfect, and with mode switching you have infinitely many combos so you can play shit like euro truck sim with full controls

yeah that's why no one bought them until they dropped the price to 5 bux

>I did attempt to purchase it during the sale and they were out of stock.
>Fucking nigger.

I'm sure you can find a new unopened one for $100 on eBay :-)

>>goes unnoticed
Not true. A whole of five people are using it.
>>a controller that is so good that it remains competitive with KB+M players in arena shooters on PC
Happens with regular controllers too, you just dont wanna admit it. Look up Titanfall PC vs console tournament

I feel pretty good about buying an extra controller to sell it. Just waiting a little longer, but they're averaging $70 now

The reason I got the steam controller was because I played through Half-Life 2 on a Switch Pro and thought "man, a steam controller must be even better!"

It wasn't The controller is an ungodly shape that makes it extremely difficult to hit the bumpers and the face buttons. The trackpad, while better than an analog stick on its own for aiming, is not superior to analog stick + gyro. Gyro is better at default settings in the Switch Pro than in the Steam controller. If the Switch Pro had back paddles it'd be a 10/10 controller. Steam Controller is just an 8/10 for me, tied with Xbox One controller even though that doesn't have gyro at all.

Nah you're shit controller sucks and I'll stick to my Xbox Elite controller that BTFOs it out of the water, Valve drone.

>quite a few that are ruined by its inclusion
name ONE

I have 2 in box I'm saving until like 20 years from now

Maybe I'll do the same. Hopefully they'll be worth something to someone.

You must have a low IQ then. Steam Controller & gyro aiming is not hard to nail down in Half Life 2. The SC feels made for that game.

hl2 was made for keyboard

I was quoting someone else vroh

>comes with rechargable battery pack
>takes in AA batteries as well

I wish Valve would copy this for the SC 2.0

and give it some proper rumble motors. It'd then be fucking perfect.

Open or closed source?

I might agree if that button config wasn't so alien to every modern controller

>he plays "competitive" plebshooters
lmao

Kek, hope you don't actually use it. I bought 2 during the fire sale, but I'm on my 5th Steam Controller (those will be 6 and 7). With regular use they go about 1 year before something breaks, usually a shoulder button or a face button.

With some effort you can take apart a broken one and swap the parts out with another broken one to cobble together a working controller, and I most certainly have done this a number of times, which helps extend their longevity, but ultimately they break down. Fast. The build quality is substandard.

I would hate the thing if I didn't love it so much. I wish literally anyone else was making controllers in the SC spec.

I've been using one since launch you fucking caveman, stop slamming your controller into the wall

Fuck these faggots. They shipped my steam controller with fedex when they were having the huge issue with drivers stealing packages, and I never received mine.

>The trackpad, while better than an analog stick on its own for aiming, is not superior to analog stick + gyro.
True. That's why trackpad + gyro is what should be used.

Console players need aim assist to compete with pc players

I miss six-face-button controllers. Apart from their use in Saturn and Genesis emulation, they've also got value for N64 emulation (A, B, C buttons are arrayed the same way), old school arcade fighters with 3+3 p/k inputs, and (if it ever happens) OG Xbox Hueg emulation with the Black and White buttons.

The only reason they never stuck around is because of the XInput standard, but there are plenty of modern games jamming inputs on the d-pad that would have benefitted from 6 face buttons being standard, especially in an era with 4 shoulder buttons standard and 2-4 grip buttons increasingly becoming common.

Better sell it before the version 2 is announced though. Their price will plummet at that point.

Yeah, that's also a concern of mine. The SC 2 will likely be $50 at most. Then again Valve released a VR headset that's over $1k so I guess we'll see.

BASED

>I'm on my 5th Steam Controller

Do you slam them to the ground in a fit of rage while playing or something? I'm still on my first controller of 4 years or so, have probably around 1000 hours on it and have dropped it multiple times and still have no issues.
Grabbed a backup during the sale just in case too, I'll be set for years to come.

nice

Contact Valve, they're pretty good about that shit

I bought 2 of these when they were like $5 on steam, they are shit. Not since MadCatz' N64 controllers have I held a controller that felt so cheap and chintzy. The buttons are squishy and anything tighter than a featherweight grip feels like you're about to crush it in your hands.

Attached: maxresdefault (34).jpg (1280x720, 114.26K)

You haven't been using it regularly. You don't have to manhandle it, just put a lot of hours on it. The bumpers are made of very fragile parts, it's basically a piece of plastic designed to flex in place which naturally wears as its pressed or held for long periods because of the tensile strain on the plastic.

The face buttons also have convex latex domes for their resistance, too... in other words, "the component of every cheap piece of shit keyboard that everyone hates which is why everyone swears by mechanical". They tend to rip with a lot of repeat pressing and wear besides that. Play a lot of action games and you can actually tell which buttons your melee attacks are on because they don't offer the same degree of resistance to rapid presses as the ones not in regular "mashing" use, and that's apparent after only a couple months of daily play sessions.

I mean, holding the thing in your hand, you can feel it weighing about as much as a roll of scotch tape. It's really clear that all of the money was spent on the touchpads, and they work phenomenally and have never shown any signs of wear for me (well, I did once have one start to act up from clicking it in, but a disassemble-reassemble fixed that, so I assume something had just slipped a little bit inside). But the rest of the parts are cheaply made and they last as long as cheaply made lightweight plastic components tend to last.

I'd have picked up two or three if I'd known they were on a permanent clearance sale back when they were $5 a pop.

I love my steam controller. Just wish the bumpers weren't so big, clicky, and offset out so much compared to the triggers.
