it's all about normalfags. even new leaf was super popular with normalfags, which i never knew. My coworkers who as far as i knew play no vidya were expressing excitement over new horizons or considering getting a switch for it, talking about how much they loved new leaf. i asked about other games they played and they said they only really care about animal crossing.

Nah, there are other games worth playing for sure, it's just that AC is a pretty big title that only drops every few years, promotes daily play and has a lot to be shown to other players because the experience isn't the same for everybody.
Other platforms also have the same occurrence. CoD was the most played at one time, GTA was the most played at another.
