Writing was on the wall to be honest. The episodic release was a huge red flag, as was Sephiroth showing up literally everywhere in his KH/AC form. It's also notable that FF's track record has been abysmal for years. There tends to be something salvageable in their games, but I think everything since XII has been a trainwreck of some sort.

The hope here was the sheer legacy that FF7 carried, and the early trailers and stuff (Honey Bee not being cut, squats being in, Cloud not being his AC/KH emo self) gave the impression that while they were obviously going to change some things, for the most part it was pretty faithful and it seemed they were respecting the original game and its legacy.
Then it all came crashing down over the last few days. It's just disappointing

In the original Japanese line, it was "zuru zuru" which is a sound one makes when dragging their feet. The implication is that Cloud is wandering about, dragging his past and being weighed down by it.

Developers today just don't understand what made the games they're remaking special. They're completely different people, and if they're the same people, they're completely different because of age. The lightning in a bottle of most of these games comes from a time when lots of gaming was, for the most part, passion projects for a niche market.
Now it's big, multimillion dollar business so you have corporate directors and market analysts having input on games in order to maximize profit for shareholders. And that input will ALWAYS hurt a creative endeavor because most if not all of the time it's dedicated to making sure the product has as much widespread appeal as possible. I'm not saying this shit didn't happen back then, but it just seemed as though developers actually cared about what they were putting out. And they had to get it right because there were no patches or updates that could save a busted game once it shipped.

Ending took it from a 9/10 to a 6/10.
