Thoughts? Why didn’t games evolve in the 2010s?

because people kept buying them as is lol.

Because graphical returns have been severely diminishing since the early 2010s. Even the leap from PS2 gen to PS3 gen wasn't nearly as insane as the leap from 2D to early 3D or early 3D to the PS2 gen.

Just say you don't like the thing instead of making correlations between arbitrary sets of data.

Demishnining returns.

Tbf, if you play a PS3 game and then go to a PS4 game it’s a pretty big visual improvement. I just got done with Mass Effect 1 and then started playing RDR2. There’s a big difference.

Anti piracy measures

Consoles really hold things back but keep buying them

what kind of stupid comparison is this?

i pity all the zoomers on this board who will never in their life experience a graphical leap.

go play gears 1 and gears 4 and see how much has improved, mustard cuck

What’s the next big breakthrough in gaming going to be?

>tries to insult someone by unironically mentioning fucking gears
you'll have to pay me to even consider wasting my time on this garbage

>GTA3
>32MB
Is this a troll?

Can you even count motherfucker

this image is stupid, never post it again

do it again but without skipping generations and after you study the difference between 720p and 1080p.
Also xbox huge entire's selling point was the online, so fuck off inbred.

Wtf is mg? Does gta 3 weights 32 milligrams?

It actually says "mg"
lmao this is a troll.

>we could've had PS3 polycount slightly improved and complemented by much better particle, lightning effcts and physics.
>Nah let's just keep pushing polycount to the max and optimizing nothing so eprformance is as bad as it was several gens ago

The relative difference is far smaller from 12gb to 60gb though.

>bro 2d to 3d is nothin compared to 360 more p's for my school shoot trainer

i've been playing halo 1 CE on PC and the anniversary HD graphics legitimately hurt my eyes compared to the original halo 1 graphics. there is no sense of composition or contrast in the anniversary graphics style, it's just a bland, brown & bloomy mess

because of a loss of clear technological boundaries to what games can do mechanically, AAA studios have settled into a groove that they are unlikely to fall out of anytime soon. On the other hand, indie devs are pushing the boundaries of what they can do with limited manpower constantly. Anybody still looking for innovation in AAA titles and complaining that they can't find it is too lazy to use google.

It will be when developers can harness quantum computing. That happens and we have ourselves another major leap forward.

This and poor coding/optimisation.
It's not about having talented workers anymore, it's about having a guy who can do the job for the lowest possible cost so they can put even more money on advertising.

This is what happens when modern engines include convenient automated tools and ready-to-use shaders.
Theory: Your artist will be able to save time!
Reality: Publisher realizes artist is no longer needed at all.

K, but that has nothing to do with what that user said.
He was playing two good and well done games.

You're playing a fucking cashgrab and a fucking remaster, which are all always shit. So fuck off microdrone.

>CPUs havent gotten faster in the last 10 years, they've just made them more efficient by slapping more cores and cache on them, we're still sub-5ghz.
>RAM hasnt really gotten better, everyone still uses 16 or 32gig. most new PCs still only come with 8 or 16 gigs. it's been like this for 6 or 7 years now thanks to Samsung's monopoly on memory and their prices.
>GFX cards were making progress but thanks to crypto mining russians and chinese any advances are ruined by hugely inflated prices and lack of availability.
>internet hasnt gotten faster in the last 10 years, still at 100mbit or gigabit speeds.
>game devs are forced to shit out unfinished products by their stockmarket executive overlords, so games are unoptimized as fuck resulting in new games in 2020 looking like something from 2010 but running so poorly that you no matter what NASA super computer you own you still only get 10fps to make the gfx of a facebook game.
the only advancement we've had in the last 10 years has been hard drive size. it's nice being able to get a 5tb HDD for under $100 but that's literally the only advancement we've had.

We're all literally waiting for 3 things to happen
We need
>crypto to die so gfx cards are saved
>Samsung to die so RAM monopoly is broken up and memory is saved
>Quantum computing to become available to the common person, allowing us to break the 5ghz barrier set by the limitations of silicon processors.

Until then, everything's either unoptimized as fuck or we're paying thousands of dollars for minor improvements to irrelevant bullshit like cache speed and CPUs with 16 cores (even though 95% of programs only use 1~4 cores)

Because games became too big to fail so they became the safest pedestrian products

Have you even tried getting a job in the gaming industry? It's literally impossible unless you know someone or you've programmed your own engine.

how am i microdrone if i am deliberately slamming a microsoft product you dumb fucking goon

You can't go 4-D.

You have posted a good example of the incredible increase in complexity and possibility that adding an extra dimension adds.

KICK HIS ASS, SEA BASS

We already have the next leap. It's called VR and Yas Forums's reaction is just "boohoo mom won't buy me something that expensive"

>poor coding/optimisation
Been thinking about it for a while now and i'm starting to think devs aren't as shitty as we say. Game engines are so complicated now and yet games mostly work when they're released. Go back 20 years in the past and pc games used to be super broken without patches, same for consoles except no updates for them.

I feel this is the big difference between moderns kids and olders gen kids. They'll (most of them) be entitled to good graphic and performance because that's all they'll ever see. There's no room for imagination, experimentation or "toy-like" experience, most games are heavily hand guided, quick to digest and made for short term rewards.
Only those kids growing in poor households where money for vidya and tech is limited will develop a sense of appreciation for humbler games.

Lightning systems is what I hate the most. So many "HD ports" are just a shitty new system, some bumpmaps and sometimes textures improvements, but these later also end up fucked up most of the time and overall the art direction gets destroyed.

Kek this

But to be fair I just don’t see any reason to own a VR at the moment. It’s a fuck load of money and there aren’t that many games.

Bullshit. Game devs have always been garbage. Now it's just more obvious.

After war of budgets happened, there is no place to move anymore. Games already peaked in terms of quality and design.

for halo 1 specifically, bungie probably did a shitload of testing to make sure every color in the terrain contrasts well with the NPCs. you can always clearly make out elites, grunts and hunters etc. in the midst of a battle because of the bold and varied color scheme. the low poly-count also makes it easier to make out their shapes in the distance. meanwhile it seems like the remaster guys just upped the polycount and desaturated every graphical asset in the game with as little effort as possible (possibly using those automated tools) and then just threw them together without ever actually playtesting it like the bungie guys did.

if you play halo 1 as someone with a little bit of game dev or programming background, it becomes clear that whoever made the game had a fuckton of passion for the project with how finely tuned everything is, which is the opposite of what anything made by the 343 guys looks like.

optimization isn't really on top of the devs minds because games are sold with screenshots and 30 fps trailers on youtube. that's why RTX is the new forced marketing meme instead of good framerates or higher resolutions, it's much easier to sell raytracing reflections on youtube than it is to sell better framerates.

There absolutely are if you stop for a minute and quit listening to Yas Forums memes.

vorpx.com/supported-games/

It's not even coding or optimisation. It's all uncompressed texture, audio and video files. For instance Tekken 7, a 70GB game, can be cut down to 40 just by taking out the hours-worth of cutscene files and further down to 30 by getting rid of the ~25 songs

It's left like that by publishers to counter piracy and dominate disk-space so you can play (and consider buying microtransactions for) less games at a time

Attached: yugioh.png (419x610, 444.29K)

>mg

Talented software engineers were all hired by silicon valley megacorps like Google, the ones that work on games outside of Rockstar are all bellow average programers

I do also feel its worth pointing out that uncompressed audio and textures load much faster as they don't need to be uncompressed in order to use the asset.
While I could maybe put up with slower loading times plenty of people probably wouldn't. I remember there was a lot of OH NO NO posting about bloodborne having some pretty long loading times.

which is kind of funny because games make a shitload of money. sadly very little of that money goes towards the devs. on the bright side, this is what allows AA and indie devs to thrive since they are competing against incompetence

>They'll (most of them) be entitled to good graphic and performance because that's all they'll ever see
We haven't seen good performance in at least a decade. An indie game with SNES graphics these days is usually at least a gigabyte in size and requires a dual core processor. Compared to that, the original ran on a setup that probably wouldn't even make it into a digital clock these days.

what's the law where companies see if they can keep selling shit while offering less and less? the public is rather stupid considering fallout76 sold as much as it did

the pic comparing the art design, textures and lighting from REmake versus REmaster is a perfect example. can't find the pic but they compared the birdcage not having shadows, etc.

>games make a shitload of money
I'll tell you something funny.
Microsoft Office by itself earns more than the entire PC+Console game market.

Absolutely false, not even at its height. Games make more than Movies and TV combined. Office, even when it was an actual monopoly, doesn't make a fraction of that. Maybe in the 2000s when the medium was barely half its current size? Sure.

it's more or less irrelevant anyway considering you can't keep pumping out more microsoft offices to make more money. the singular product has cornered the entire market and you can't make people buy more of its kind since they already have it.

>comparing an enterprise tool with service contracts to a consumer product
nigger you could say the same shit for things like salesforce, atlassan, zendesk, etc. and I'm not even sure that your numbers are right at all

Wow OP, this is the dumbest thread I've seen this year. Congratulations.
