Finally got around to playing this. I know it's somewhat of a meme to call it out for being overrated and such, but man it really fucking is.
>Praised to the heavens as the second coming of christ on release for its story The story was fine. But it blew its load in the opening. Nothing ever, at any point in the rest of the game came close to the first 10 minutes of the game. The rest was just zombie movie cliche mixed with the occasional torture porn segmant.
>That ending Not putting this lightly, but that was possibly the most abrupt, anti climatic ending i've witnessed. You rescue ellie in the hospital, enter an elevator, then the game just kinda farts out of existence. What was the point? Why the fuck did they go through all that, just to say "lol no" at the last second? Was the whole thing of him lying to her meant to be some huge fucking twist that i was meant to be all "OMG WTF????" over?
>Gameplay By about a quarter of the way in i was tired of the core gameplay loop. Kill some guys, find some ammo, do a shitty puzzle that a newborn could solve, watch cutscene, repeat. Gunplay was shit, enemies were repetitive as fuck, and the friendly AI was abysmal and often totally ruined any immersion that was built up.
Why the fuck did this get so much praise? It wasn't bad, but it sure as shit is not GOTAY like everyone claims. Best segments were the intro, and the chapter where you play as ellie. The rest was just standard survival horror tropes.
Because it was one of the first western games to go for muh deep serious plot and it had strong whamen in it which made soibois shit themselves with glee
Still mad that Joel didn't bleed out after being impaled.
Ryder Powell
?
Colton Lewis
It was really good, 8/10 in my book. At the time there was really nothing like it, maybe the first Red Dead Redemption can come close in terms of scope. I personally was dissapointed by the ending, I hate the whole "was it real or did he imagine it" vibe it had, and Joel's deciscion at the end. It's a really good game though.
Caleb Howard
Nah, its a fantastic game. You're just a cunt who got manipulated into thinking its trash.
Tyler Morgan
Feel free to argue with my points. I've not been manipulated at all, just put it off for years.
>That ending >Not putting this lightly, but that was possibly the most abrupt, anti climatic ending i've witnessed.
Yeah you're obviously a fucking retarded teenager.
>Why the fuck did this get so much praise?
Because it raised the bar for story driven adventure games. It just blew everything else out of the water and all of sudden everybody else wanted to be like TLoU.
Of course 14 year old babbies can't understand why.
Luke Adams
Honestly same. I'd have been much more invested in the story i reckon if it had shifted to entirely ellies POV after that. How the fuck did she even manage to escort him to that cabin?
I'm 26. I honestly don't think it was that great. There were games with better stories well before, and there were games with better gameplay well before. I'm legit curious, whats your defense in regard to the ending?
>Of course 14 year old babbies can't understand why. Please endulge me, how did it "blow everything else out of the water"?
Jace Phillips
>enter an elevator, then the game just kinda farts out of existence. What was the point? Why the fuck did they go through all that, just to say "lol no" at the last second? user, I don't even disagree with the rest of your arguments but come on, this plot point was not even subtle.
Caleb Hall
The Last of Us was only praised so heavily because subhuman freak "reviewers" and (let me assure you I use this word as loosely as possible, forgive me) """"journalists"""" want to be taken seriously as "art critics" and thus elevate anything that has ANY sort of mainstream possibility of impact and emotional appeal to Godhood. They're all pretentious failures who desperately want to "critique" real art (not video games, video games are toys for fat children and a device to steal money from stupid people) so they try desperately to turn video games into "real art" instead of toys.
Elijah Hernandez
I'll admit i was exagerating a bit, but it did kinda feel like it came outta nowhere. There was no real build up to the "twist" that she wasn't special, and joel using her as a replacement for his own daughter and deciding not to hand her over could have been done in way better ways imo.
Ian Martin
I agree in which is no the best of the best but it is without a doubt a good game with a good story and the spin it gave to zombies was quite pleasant for me as for the overall story i found it well executed and while not the most original out there at least for a zombie game it is really good i can't really agree with you about the first 10 mins. since i found plenty of things that happened during the game just as good and yeah the last part of the game feels a little rushed, like the game needed to end already and is shows but by any means i find the last scene between Ellie and Joel bad at all maybe you just did not pick up some of the nuances of their relationship during the game. Gampelay wise i found it good even if a little repetitive at times. Also dat plebbit spacing, you are on Yas Forums fag.
Colton Ramirez
>Also dat plebbit spacing, you are on Yas Forums fag. Not OP but piss off with this shit. Who the fuck still argues about "m-muh reddit..." in fucking 2020? And about spacing no less. Goddamn, that's retarded.
Kevin Williams
>There were games with better stories well before.
Yeah I'm sure there plenty of people who will trying and tell me Star Wars had a better story than The Godfather. There's no accounting for taste.
>whats your defense in regard to the ending?
The ending is disturbing. Joel literally murders a hospital full of innocent people who are trying to save mankind. Its not a cutscene. Its YOU the player who has to do this. Joel throws the entire human race under the bus just to save Ellie. And then he lies to her about it. The small sliver of happiness Ellie provides to him is worth it. Ellie knows its a lie but goes along with it. Its supposed to make you question everything you just played. Was Joel the bad guy all along? Is he right? Is he a hero? Or is he a pathetic broken man? Its ambiguous and emotionally profound. Buts its a perfectly judged ending displaying a level of maturity, thematic resonance and sophistication rarely seen in games.
Its like kids who get upset at the ending of Easy Rider. Its not the Hollywood bullshit ending they were anticipating.
Parker Wood
>Joel throws the entire human race under the bus just to save Ellie. Fireflies were fucking jobbers who would probably fail at creating the vaccine. Even if the did create it, the social fabric is already fucked beyond repair anyway, there is no saving mankind.
Brandon Watson
>Was Joel the bad guy all along? Is he right? Is he a hero? Or is he a pathetic broken man?
I feel though like all of these were clear from the start. Literally from the opening scenes with tess and joel, it's clear that hes a self centered prick. Him killing the doctors had 0 punch to it, he'd killed countless people throughout, and was always quick to go straight into beating the shit out of people (Sam or whatever the fuck the black guy was called as an example). As soon as i got that audio tape of the doctor talking about how ellie wasn't unique, I saw exactly where it was gonna go. In fact, as early as the game telling you ellie was infected, I could have guessed the game would involve joel using her as a substitute for his lost daughter.
>Its ambiguous and emotionally profound. Buts its a perfectly judged ending displaying a level of maturity, thematic resonance and sophistication rarely seen in games.
I dunno, i never really felt any of this. Every plot point was a horror trope thats been done better elsewhere in other games/media.
Nathaniel Kelly
>Every plot point was a horror trope thats been done better elsewhere in other games/media.
No we're specifically games here. Not movies,tv shows or books. Just video games.
Tell me a better story driven gaming experience which existed before TLoU.
Carter Watson
>Tell me a better story driven gaming experience which existed before TLoU. Deus Ex Planescape Torment
Just two of the top of my head.
Grayson Perry
The voice acting alone is beneath TLoU. Sorry.
Jack Lewis
>Deus Ex >Planescape Torment
LOL no.
Nolan Roberts
Sure, voice acting in both is shit. Storylines in each though are vastly more complex and well written than TLOU. You can't make the claim that we are "Specifically games", then discount games on something as trivial as VA
Nolan Parker
>2013 Yas Forums >Openly shits on and despises this piece of shit
>2020 Yas Forums >Defends it to the death
How times change.
Joseph Wood
Why do people like to suck these games dicks so much on Yas Forums, and yet shit on most games that are either the same or more popular?
Brandon Nelson
It is one the most mediocre games of all time. People who think it's amazing never played PC games. Like you said, it's just zombie cliché and a horrible AI partner that runs into enemies. All the action segments take place in obvious little arenas.
It's a game for brand dead people. They love this kind of shit where they feel like they are badasses but most of the time it's just a walking and talking simulator. People who praise this also think NuGod of War and Horizon are super deeeep epic games. This is what they want video games to be. Just high production graphics wank.
Isaiah Robinson
>2013, Yas Forums knows this is garbage >2020, zoomed redditors who were kids when this came out think it's a masterpiece
I still love how the movie "Pixels" shits on this game.
Jonathan Foster
>trying to save humanity Wasn’t there a collectable in that very level that outlined the astronomically low chance that they could even manufacture a vaccine?
Jeremiah Cox
>You can't make the claim that we are "Specifically games", then discount games on something as trivial as VA
Like I said, TLoU raised the bar. From the story to the voice acting to the music to the art design to the self-contained iconography. Youngsters seem incapable of digesting the complete experience of things.
Brandon Nelson
Lost odyssey without a doubt has an actual emotional story.
Cooper Cook
It's an accurate way to describe the way the game play was presented.
Henry Rogers
Not OP, but its funny to me how people make arguments like this, insist that it's "good for a video game", but then don't actually mention the fucking GAMEPLAY.
Brayden Baker
Its okay but nothing overly amazing.
Nathan Davis
Cringe
Blake Williams
>Gunplay was shit, enemies were repetitive as fuck What difficulty did you play?
Also, regardless of your feelings towards the single player I implore you to try the multiplayer if you're talking about the PS4 version. It's the sleeper hit resting inside the game, I dominated the PS3 version and am getting a PS4 just to keep playing. There is no feeling any game quite like being the person with your team's very last life and using bomb traps and hoarding shiv supplies to slowly pick off the other team's lives.
>What difficulty did you play? Hard. Not tried the multiplayer, but the general "feel" (for want of a better term) of the game wasn't great imo, which makes me hesitant to try the MP
Kevin Sanders
>the general "feel" How so? I personally loved the stealth system, it translates into multiplayer (sneaking up behind players and shivving them etc) pretty well.
Oliver Price
>raised the bar for story driven adventure games
Brody Flores
Its funny to me how all these years later we still get underage plebs trying to convince themselves that this universally acclaimed and award-winning game was bad.
Adam Price
What do you think really nails a game as being journo-bait, Yas Forums?
don't say "muh politics/wokeness," there are thousands of games that actually focus on social justice topics that journos couldn't give half of a shit about.
Thomas Sanders
I guess it just felt clunky. Movement felt like i was controlling a gears of war character, the animations on certain things like melee attacks were too snappy and not fluid/dynamic enough, and the shooting never felt satisfying enough
James Foster
Story and characters are important to make you feel invested in a game otherwise you might as well be playing PONG.
Gavin Hernandez
>Journos say its good >Therefor its good
Get me off nu/v/ i want this ride to end.
Luis Long
>all the 10/10 awards were mostly paid for >Sony padded the awards from literally newspapers and shit like fashion magazines and European game blogs
Hudson Jackson
>Shooting your way through every encounter How can you even do that without constantly running out of ammo in this game? Did you do that thing where you reload the same checkpoint and farm ammo from it? I thought guns were supposed to be a backup to stealth/melee, and every "good" player I've seen go through the game almost never used guns or exposed themselves in the open unless they were in a close quarters brawl.
Playing TLOU like a shooter is like playing MGS like a shooter, to me at least.
Sebastian Edwards
So is this like Spec Ops the Line? >praised to no end for its story and 2deep4u cutscenes >actually play it >it is just a bit above average at some places with some clever ideas if didn't play many video games and below everywhere else >plus some pretentious moral dilemmas
>maturity, thematic resonance and sophistication rarely seen in games >follow the marker >new mission, do this >do it >lol you were the bad guy all along >you could have turned off the game So mature, amirite?
Kayden Davis
>What difficulty did you play? Is this the million dollar "of course the game is shit if you didn't play it on the hardest difficulty" question?
Samuel Gutierrez
>Did you do that thing where you reload the same checkpoint and farm ammo from it? Didn't even know you could do that. I never found myself particularly scarce on resources. Was always enough to find if i spent enough time looking. I honestly found the most efficient path through the game to be just spamming melee attacks, and popping off headshots.
Austin Butler
>Mentally ill 14 year old incel on a Chinese image board says its bad.
KEK.
Michael Davis
Only retards think. Go read a fucking book. That's why Nintendo and Sega are the best in the business because they're all about gameplay first and story last. Once Microsoft and Sony forced themselves in games started to become and more and more as just interactive movie shit for casuals.
Kayden Ward
It's the shining example of a moviegame
Landon Taylor
I thought gameplay are important in a game. If I want to watch an Oscar bait movie I have plenty to choose from. >look here is cute girl >look cute girl is your daughteru and need to be saved >also cute daughteru can do what boys can because you taught her >but she still needs your huge manly dick to grab onto >of course you do it because you are a nice guy also DARK TRAUMATIC PAST where you failed but now you won't >wow you monster you did the only thing the game allowed you to >truly the last of us
David Johnson
Any jrpg from Dragon Quest to final fantasy X. Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, fuck even God of War is less predictable and believable than TLoU. The amount of ludonarrative dissonance in this game is off the charts. And by any means I think TLoU is a bad game. It is just not that big of a deal in the story department. Graphics are great, gameplay is fine, the lore is kinda fresh, but the story, the story is a 2/10. Druckmann is a fucking hack.
Blake Lewis
>More seething
Carter Thomas
Uh, twist? Ellie IS inmune. Joel's just lying so she doesn't have to worry about "oh my god I could've saved humanity" and also doesn't get mad at him.
Jack Rodriguez
I know it came out later and it's a book instead of a movie but disco elysium is a lot better desu
Samuel Wright
The Last Of Us and Breath Of The Wild are my two favourite video games of the past 10 years. They are fucking incredible. This is what *I* personally think.
It just so happens that the vast majority of Planet Earth agrees with me.
But then I come to 4channel and find a bunch of socially stunted schizo babbies throwing shit around.
As a general rule: if a game has any of the following:
1) gets universal acclaim 2) achieves massive success 3) achieves mainstream recognition 4) is a console exclusive
Then the seething screetching autistic babbies of 4channel will irrationally hate it. Pretty funny to watch. You can't make me hate great video games lol. Continue with your irrelevant screetching.
Twist I was referring to was the audio tape that says they've found others like her before
Lincoln Morales
Ah sure, but that's obviously not the reason Joel lies to Ellie. Especially not if you miss that collectable.
Levi Peterson
Why the fuck can't you be more creative with your bait, if i'm gonna shitpost i'll make sure to be subtle about it
Michael Gonzalez
>dark souls is rehashed trash >gtav is worse than 4 in nearly ever aspect >minecraft was never finished >skyrim, worse than morrowind
BUT MY TASTE IN GAMES IS RIGHT BECAUSE THE DISNEY AUDIENCE AGREES WITH ME THAT BEST SELLER = TOP OF THE CROP
William Rogers
LOL! Babbies be seething.
Benjamin Wilson
Nobody said anything about Breath of the Wild. Sure you can defend your first "dad has to kill to save his child" story and nobody stops you from liking it. But as soon as you starting to call people losers you automatically lost any credibility. Millions love the Kardashians, Apple etc I guess they must be the best thing. Go worship them.
Grayson Taylor
That ending was a joke, you kill loads of people during the game why killing a few more would make any impact? The firefly had no idea what they were doing, how the fuck do you research a vaccine using dead tissue? They would need her alive, not cut into a thousand pieces. That ending was pure bulshit and I couldnt stop laughing watching it. Now Ellie got a massive tattoo on her arm, she got an open wound at that size, in a dystopian world where health is crucial and a simple infection could kill you. Fuck that. The more this game tries to impress, the more ridiculous it gets.
Eli Sanders
>s-seething I'm right and you're wrong haha incels btfo haha
At the end of the day most people know that The Last of Us is overrated.
Joseph Ross
None of your points are points. There all your feelings none of them are critiques. Its just you saying “I didn’t like this” for three paragraphs
