Southern Kentucky here. Because the South is actual filth. My family abandoned our house and jumped ship to the West because our area legitimately devolved into the likes of Slab City. Pre AC being inside in the South was intolerable during the afternoon in Summertime. Being in sunlight was also intolerable at those hours. Thus the large porch became the site for afternoon social gatherings, relaxation, and just generally existing. Somewhere more temperate would have no problems just staying indoors, thus no need for a large porch.
