Ive pulled thousands of hours into 14 and I feel that its made me brain dead for this game

My character has been abandoned in Bostauniex Oubliette for about a decade now. The world outside would confuse and frighten her.

No, and quests in general in FFXI aren't very lucrative. You mostly just do them for story or unlocking something. Those older games take the real life approach of throwing you into a world and you have to go figure out what you want to do. Which mostly translates to people using wikis.

they did. in 2018 they released a single install for all the expansions. they update it every few months so all you need is the latest patch not a huge 15 gig update.

Actually, a lot of XI zones were creepy and unnerving as hell; especially when they had no music and only eerie sound effects

yeah. though everything is done through the SE website once you get it installed. pol is essentially log in click the ffxi icon.

That was the prison of Sandoria right? They did ambiance very well for such an old game. Gusgen Mines comes to mind as well, ghosts all over the place but it's never really explained.

The ghosts in Gusgen Mines were the miners/children who played in the mines that died during accidents
6 of the deaths were suspected to have not been related to accidents, but murder (The 6 Ghost NMs that spawn with the Sirens)
Lore for it was only dropped during a few specific quests, I believe
Always found the Ghosts NMs interesting in there; specifically because I swear I remember them being unique NMs that would do shit like grow in size to freak the player out

Tried getting back into it during their free week some time ago. Man too much has changed, everyone has these gold stars above their head. Plus multiboxing seemed to be a problem. Oh well.

The only one really worth playing is Eden and even then it has some missing/broken quests

Promyvion is pretty horrifying when you also realize that the monsters in the zone are just memories of the souls that got sucked into Promy and eventually warped/mutated into those creatures

Every single one has a problem.
Nasomi has all the players but its run by a single guy spaghetti coding his way thru. The server itself is probably the most solid of all of them due to the crazy shit he has it running on.

Eden is probably the 2nd largest (i think) but their GMs/Devs arent the greatest.

Omega has a small pop

Resolute has a ton of custom shit which most people wont like, thich explains its low pop.

Not a single "good enough" server.

Especially the reveal that Shinryu is the result of you failing to defeat Promathia in that timeline, so he absorbed you and everyone else there (except for Prishe) and transformed into Shinryu
